Here's a follow up piece to my blog post from last January about 10 Avatar Generators for Profile Pictures, which proved to be very popular. There's obviously a lot of interest in these kind of websites! Here are 5 more sites which let you create cartoon versions of yourself which your students (or you!)  can use as an avatar in place of their own photograph.

With PhotoCard you can make dazzling, high resolution postcards on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, and send them on-the-spot, through e-mail or the US Postal Service. The app is amazingly easy to use. To create a PhotoCard, select one of Bill's nature photos or use one of your own personal photos. Then, flip the card over to type your message. For a fun touch, jazz up your PhotoCard with decorative stickers and stamps. If you're e-mailing your card, it can even include an audible greeting. When you've finished your creation, send it off to any e-mail or postal address in the world!

Smarty Pants School enables you to monitor and nurture your children's early reading skills based on the official recommendations of the National Reading Panel.

Through the use of these math applications, students will improve their skills with basic math facts and mental computation.  Used on a weekly basis, this apptivity has shown documented improvement in students' abilities on timed addition, subtraction, multiplication and division tests.  This apptivity is designed to be used as math centers, which the students rotate through in fifteen minute intervals over a 45 minute math period.

A free Jamestown app that reads like a text book but has numerous videos embedded to enrich multimodal learning.

VuSafe provides a place for you to find, organize, and watch videos in a secure, filtered environment. VuSafe offers a password protected environment in which you can post videos for your students to watch without exposing them to the comments, advertisements, and automatically generated related videos found on YouTube. As a teacher you can search for videos either through VuSafe or directly on YouTube. When you find the video you want, you can tag it by content and grade level and add it to your VuSafe page. Animation app in which you can create flipbook and motion path clips. Great because students don't have to redraw every frame. Great alternative means for students to demonstrate content knowledge.

This quasi experimental web site is designed to foster visual thinking and creative writing.

Add a forum or "gab" to a blog.

Students and teachers from all over the world are learning from audio and video programs on desktop computers, laptops, iPods, netbooks, and other devices. Hundreds of free educational programs are available online. Here are some examples: Grammar Girls Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing, English Idioms and Slang, Storynory: Free Audio Stories for Kids, MathGrad: Everyday Mathematics Explained, and First Amendment Minute.

One very apparent trend is that some authors only plug their books or related products in their tweets and never provide any other information. These authors were culled from the list in favor of those writers who are trying to carry on a conversation with their followers and present information they might find valuable, whether it directly benefits them or not. After all, why would I want to follow someone who only tries to sell me something?

An easy way to find lessons and interactive sites for the SMARTboard.

SEA-SAWS is a new interactive activity developed by the Gallery's education department. Young artists choose photographs of natural and man-made objects, then assemble the pieces to create a seascape or an abstract composition.
