They get the idea from the Fedora'd men of the early 1900s, who actually managed to pull the Fedora off because they're not complete tossers unlike the neckbeards.

Good answer. I also can add that fedoras are not out of style. Its just the hippies/counterculture/sexual revolution/JFK/LBJ who ruined it. In the 1960s many hat makers were dying out. Personally I know why I wear Fedoras. One reason is that they are stylish and they add some pizzazz element to a look!
