  They think it makes them look 'cool', 'mysterious', 'brooding', 'dark', 'dangerous', 'intellectual' or combination of those six.
  
  They get the idea from the Fedora'd men of the early 1900s, who actually managed to pull the Fedora off because they're not complete tossers unlike the neckbeards.
  
  So they put on a fedora, thinking it will bring them respect or something.

  Good answer. I also can add that fedoras are not out of style. Its just the hippies/counterculture/sexual revolution/JFK/LBJ who ruined it. In the 1960s many hat makers were dying out. Personally I know why I wear Fedoras. One reason is that they are stylish and they add some pizzazz element to a look!
