Reading levels of many children's books

Although this is a "store" of quizzes for many children's books, I primarily use it when determining a book's reading level for students. Many books are in this database. It is helpful when setting up a library for elementary students, but also for a parent who is curious about a book their child may be reading...is it appropriate? too hard? too easy? When you search for a title, and it is in the database, you are given its reading level.

This site promotes training for teachers in the field of human rights. There is a Lesson Plan related to Identity, which I think is key to starting a process of social inclusion. Eventhough I don't teach children, this lesson could be adapted for adults.

This website provides extensive resources on the topic of a living wage. There is a wealth of information contained on the site, which provides comprehensive coverage of many issues surrounding the idea of a living wage and its impact on workers, communities, and businesses.One particularly interesting article discusses the impact of Walmart, not only on workers, but also on shoppers. I think the information on this site can be used in the discussion of how to balance the issue of how big retailers can contribute to communities by providing jobs and affordable goods while at the same time providing a living wage as opposed to simply low paying jobs that provide little or no benefits.

Jerry, this topic is a HOT one right now with the economy not only producing few jobs, but with people working 40 hours a week and being nowhere near meeting their financial obligations. Nice choice! M.

I've always been a supporter of Walmart - one of the few I think! If it wasn't for Walmart I'm not sure I'd be able to get by. The interesting thing though is that after reading one of the articles at the UC Berkeley labor center website, I realized that Walmart could pay more to its workers if they chose to and the impact on their profits, as well as the price increases passed along to consumers, would be minimal. The article discusses what would happen if Walmart was required to pay its workers $12 an hour and concluded even if Wamart were to pass on the entire wage increase to consumers, the increased price cost to the average shopper would only be about $12.49 a year. If Walmart offered a minimum wage of $12 an hour I can't help but believe there would be less resistance to them opening new stores in hard hit economic communities.

This is an appropiate issue related to the women's rights. One of the most terrible problems women face is Domestic Violence and it must end.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization dedicated to building houses for the most needed.  It is present in 17 countries in Latin America and the caribbean.  Most of the houses are built by volunteers and families that have been benefited with houses.  This webapage can be used to present the topic of Human rights, solidarity, and how every person has the right to live in their own home.  It can also foster volunteer work in the community by contacting a local office in your country.

I am very interested in adopted and foster children. I believe every child has the human right to a safe and healthy home environment. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. This is a great website I found that helps teachers navigate with this sensitive human rights issue. It's a great resource for not only understanding how to approach adopted students, but also how to teach other children about the lives of those whom live with guardians that are not their parents.

Hellow Kizak, That video made me go back to my childhood when I had to pump water from a well for all the needs, even for cooking. We had to go to the river to do our loundry, carrying big loads of dump clothes. The situation the Niger people is living, almost all Latinamerican countries are. So as we could see the world population is growing but the natural resources as water are dicreasing.

Family leisure activities and how it contributes to reinforce family ties are the main topics of this document. It gives you a clearer picture of your student´s environment. It describes how divorce, single parenthood, poverty can affect families. It is useful to know yor student background because it is not a matter to teach them English it is, also, how the students can overcome difficulties. You can use the reading to avoid sensitive points in your classes, and to know which activities children prefer to do with their parents. I always tell my students, today you are going to tell your parents what did you learn in English, many, not all, receive possitive words about it and it shows how you can use English to create an activity children can share with their parents. This site shows something that we are losing: Values. We need to be aware that one of our duties is to reinforce family unit. We have to work not only with children but with their parents, too. You can use the information to create a comfortable environment between children and their parent. I take every opportunity to share my opinion with parents. Parents who don´t speak English I always afraid about it. With this site you can tell them that the responsibility of teaching English is yours ( their English teacher), but the responsibility to motivate their children is theirs (parents), This site can help them to prioritize their family activities, to show interest in their children activities. You can also find activities to do for the earth day. This website gives you a lot of activities for your class: Vocabulary, interactive activities. Teaching our student to care about earth and using English I guess is a good idea.

"In many conflicts, commanders see children as cheap, compliant, and effective fighters." I have quoted this statement since I find it extremely shocking. It is unbearable that children still undergo this type of unjustice not to mention others that are part of our reality in the 21st century. Where are the infancy defender organizations?
