This Internet tool lists criteria for creating CLIL-specific learning materials, provides examples of how to apply each proposed criterion while also providing a corresponding rationale with references. This is an excerpt from an article that is under publication and that includes other criteria that can be applied to the development of CLIL and non-CLIL learning materials.

These 'Core CLIL Activators' represent a synthesis of key elements of good pedagogy and good CLIL practice. They also depict some of the ways CLIL stakeholders work together to build a learning community, and, in particular, rich learning environments for students.

What is CLIL?CLIL aims to introduce students to new ideas and concepts in traditional curriculum subjects (often the humanities), using the foreign language as the medium of communication - in other words, to enhance the pupils' learning experience by exploiting the synergies between the two subjects.

TIECLIL - Translanguage in Europe - Content and Language Integrated Learning The TIE-CLIL project (funded through Socrates - Lingua Action A) promotes plurilingualism through the introduction of Content and Language Integrated Learning in five different EU languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish). The major aim of TIE-CLIL is to provide pre and in-service development programmes in CLIL for language teachers and subject teachers through building on existing knowledge of this field, to provide state-of-the-art understanding of theory and practice.

CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning. It refers to teaching subjects such as science, history and geography to students through a foreign language. This can be by the English teacher using cross-curricular content or the subject teacher using English as the language of instruction.

CLIL is a very topical matter as this educational practice enjoys widespread and increasing popularity in many parts of the world and at all levels of education (primary, secondary and tertiary).
