This article discusses the implementation of new educational standards in the state of Ohio. The new standards focus on critical thinking, evaluation and problem solving instead of fact memorization. Teachers are starting a series of professional development days to train for this change in the curriculum. It is important for teachers to have these professional development days available to them because their role as a teacher is now changing. Teachers need to understand their new role as a teacher otherwise students will not be successful using the new standards. The article states that teachers are attending sessions and participating in online training modules to help make this transition. In the Ontario curriculum critical thinking is an approach the is encouraged in school boards. However, it is not mandatory. This new change in the Common Core State Standards makes it a mandatory component in schools. Certain states have adopted this new approach. Education officials are still working implementing it nationwide. This new change in the curriculum will play a crucial role in how we view education. If successful in the states, it can possibly influence Ontario's curriculum development. The move to mandatory critical thinking and problem solving was decided because it serves as a vital skill for students' future endeavors. Engaging students in critical thinking increases effectiveness of teaching, and prepares students for the future. Secondary school director John Goforth mentions in the article that employers are looking for people who can problem solve, so why not start providing students with this essential skill.
