Before now, social studies did not have a teacher organization to represent elementary schools as the Ministry and the Ontario College of Teachers design courses. Other subjects such as math, sciences and arts already had these organizations to represent them. The idea behind this association is that it provides a voice to the area of study in regards to a continuum for all grades in history, geography and social studies. The reason why it is so important for social studies to be represented is because social studies needs to address timely topics and should be altered to accommodate the current events. A lot of social studies topics feed off of current events to provide students with the relevance to today. Therefore, having an organization represent them is perhaps even more important that an organization representing math, since math is pretty standard in regards to what content is taught. I agree with this statement because I think that it is very important to connect the school curriculum to current events, and there is no better opportunity to do this than in social studies. Social studies topics could even be incorporated into language for the elementary grades as another way to connect current events to classroom activities. Having current social studies events introduced in the classroom may get students interested and engaged in the lesson since it is an issue that they have heard about on the news, radio, or at home.
