This link provides a brief video and article regarding teaching the "igeneration". It primarily revolves around finding new techniques to captivate students. The article is based around Adam Garry's book called "Teaching the iGeneration". Instead of shying away from technology and banning it from the classroom a teacher in Indianapolis has embraced it which has led to exponential increases in social studies scores. She encourages students to text in answers to questions as well has begun to use touchscreen computers. The article suggests that we need to figure out how to bring learning kids are doing outside of school, inside of school. This article provides an interesting approach to integrating technology into schools. We as teachers need to learn to use students interests and apply them to learning scenarios. Rather than banning texting and use of cell phones in class, use them in an academic setting and monitor usage. Other ideas to engage students are teaching through twitter, Facebook and/or blogs. One thing to consider is internet safety and legal implications. Students are more involved in their learning compared to teacher led lessons. Greatly student engagement in schools is going to led to greater academic success for students. The school in Indianapolis using these strategies has seen social studies scores go from mediocre to outstanding.
