This is an article that discusses the confusion pertaining to how countries are all being renamed. Therefore, having google in this case is very helpful. However, the author of this article discusses how geography as never her strong suit due to this particular reason - she isn't able to keep up with all the name changes, border changes etc. However, there is so much more to geography than naming places, which is something that is not this way in elementary or secondary school systems, or even those outside of the field of geography in society. This article demonstrates the misconception of what the main purpose of studying geography is all about. Knowing the names of places and where they are located on a map is important, although it is even more important to understand geography to a more general extent by studying space, and place and interrelationships. Another argument made was that by having the names changing made studying geography very difficult at the elementary level. Again, this wouldn't be as difficult as it is made out to be if teachers taught the broader picture of geography rather than focusing on place names as being the most significant.
