Google Changes Its Tune on Interviews - Vault: Blog - 0 views

  • Thus, the old pre-reqs are out: GPAs, transcripts, SATS.  In fact, Google is beginning to disregard academic educations altogether: they're just not a good predictor of success at the company. Says Bock, "After two or three years, your ability to perform at Google is completely unrelated to how you performed when you were in school, because the skills you required in college are very different. You’re also fundamentally a different person. You learn and grow, you think about things differently." According to the Times, Google is putting its money where its mouth is: they've actually increased their hires with no college education—14% of some of its teams have never been to school, according to Bock. Instead, the emphasis is on hiring candidates who are leaders, and work well in teams. The only way to discover this, says Bock, is through "structured" behavior interviews that assess how a person makes decisions. The winning interviewees will be able to demonstrate that they are "consistent and fair in how [they] think about making decisions and that there’s an element of predictability." This is key to building trust among team members once hired, he explains. "If a leader is consistent, people on their teams experience tremendous freedom, because then they know that within certain parameters, they can do whatever they want. If your manager is all over the place, you’re never going to know what you can do, and you’re going to experience it as very restrictive."

Roku 2 XS Review - Watch CNET's Video Review - 0 views

  •
The good: The Roku 2 XS is an ultrasmall Wi-Fi streaming-media box that offers dozens of Internet video and audio services, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, Crackle, Pandora, NHL, NBA, and MLB, among many others. It works with HD and standard TVs, and it includes a Wii-like motion controller for casual gaming (Angry Birds is included). The bottom line: Thanks to a varied range of content offerings--including Netflix, Amazon, Hulu Plus, Crackle, and Pandora--that beats the Apple TV, the Roku 2 XS is the best all-around streaming-media box you can get for less than $100.

Bill Hammack's Video & Audio on Engineering - 0 views

  •
Make called Bill a "brilliant science-and-technology documentarian", whose "videos should be held up as models of how to present complex technical information visually" Wired called them "dazzling." Scientific American's blog called him a "smart, easygoing everyman with a firm understanding of the science." You can see 10 of his best videos below. He takes apart an LCD monitor, demonstrates how fiber optic cables work, rips up a hard drive, explains the wonder of a quartz wrist watch, solves the mystery of black boxes, blows up a light bulb filament, reveals how amazing a pop can tab truely is, shows why a cell phone looks like it does, and explains why you always seem to be in the slowest line.

Cabaret Mechanical Theatre - 1 views

  •
""Visiting Cabaret Mechanical Theatre is like drifting into a bizarre and fascinating dream" - What's on in London What is it? Well, it's not a theatre or a cabaret for a start. It's a kind of exhibition or museum (but we don't like those words). So, what is it? It's a collection of contemporary automata, which is a kind of mechanical sculpture. Nearly all of the work in the collection is humourous."

How to Automate Your Phone for Every Room in the House with NFC Tags - 0 views

  •
"This process uses Near Field Communication (NFC), a feature we've talked about once before. You've probably even seen it in commercials, where people share playlists and perform other actions just by touching their phones together. Those uses haven't really caught on, but NFC tags will work anywhere-they're basically tiny stickers, keychains, and other trinkets that perform tasks when you tap them with your phone."

Four Fun Apps to Help Gamify Your Classroom - 1 views

  •
"There are as many definitions of gamification as there are books and Ted Talks about it. My working definition (as applied to education) is pretty simple-gamification is the process of taking something students have to do and turning it into something that they get to do. We aren't talking about higher level learning here, but rather a way to take the 'ew' out of 'review.' With this goal in mind, below are four tried-and-true tools to help teachers 'funify' their classroom activities."

Easy Duplicate File Finder | File Management Download | PCWorld - 0 views

  •
"Use your PC long enough, and it will get littered with duplicate files of all kinds. Graphics files, .doc files, media files, .dll files, you'll be amazed at how many duplicates you have. They clog up your hard disk, take away precious hard disk space, and make it hard to find the files you want. This simple freebie will find duplicate files, then let you delete the ones you don't want. Point it at your hard disk or selected folders, and it goes to work, finding duplicates. It then gives you a full report, and lets you clean them en masse, or just selected ones. There's some nice intelligence built in as well. It tells you how much disk space duplicate files take up, for example, and lets you protect system files so that you don't accidentally delete any important files your PC needs in order to run properly. Fast Duplicate File Finder description, File Management Downloads List By 30 Day Change... - 1 views

  •
"With photos, videos, and music files clogging up your hard disk, it's harder than ever to keep it clean, trim, and free of duplicates. Use Fast Duplicate File Finder, though, and you'll be able to find duplicate files with ease, and keep your hard disk in tip-top shape. Fast Duplicate File Finder doesn't merely compare file names or file sizes; it does a file comparison at the binary level. This is particularly important when looking for music, video, and other media files, because you may have files with two different names, which are otherwise identical. It's got plenty of nice-to-have features, such as determining whether to delete duplicates or move them to the Recycle Bin or a custom folder; the ability to preview files before deleting them; and support for removable media such as USB drives. Fast Duplicate File finder is simple to use, goes about its work quickly, and it's free. It's this simple: If you're looking to trim your hard disk by deleting duplicate files, it won't lead you wrong. "
