Vision Statement: Mapping the Social Internet - Harvard Business Review - 1 views

  •
Part III: How do these problems relate to activities across different areas of life - not only in formal educational institutions per se, but also in informal contexts and activities of learning? Using fresh data from the Trendstream Global Web Index-a recurring survey of more than 50,000 users of social platforms in 18 markets-we mapped by country how people are sharing information about themselves online. We looked at five broadcast behaviors: blogging, managing a social-network profile, sharing photos, sharing videos, and microblogging.

Should policy be debated in social media? | Articles | FutureGov - Transforming Governm... - 0 views

  • Jiang Yichun, Deputy Division Chief, Secretariat of Dalian Administrative Service Centre, China (pictured) Social media in China tend to be a means for entertainment or making friends. Anyone is free to comment on these platforms. But when it comes to policy, social media are out of bounds - it is inappropriate for Chinese civil servants to be discussing policy on these platforms. China’s Premier, Hu Jintao, launched a blog some time ago, but it soon closed. In such an open environment where anyone can comment, this includes enemies of the state. Such individuals are often looking to spread rumours about the Chinese government, which are usually inflammatory and counterproductive. Such statements could lead to a misunderstanding of government, and undermine peace and stability. Besides, there are many other ways for government to communicate with citizens, such as online public forums, but these are subject to stringent layers of approval. One of the reasons why Google left China is that it could not accept China’s approval system.

Social Media Guidelines for Schools - 0 views

  •
Sample from PBWorks: The X School District realizes that part of 21st century learning is adapting to the changing methods of communication. The importance of teachers, students and parents engaging, collaborating, learning, and sharing in these digital environments is a part of of 21st century learning . To this aim, X School District has developed the following guideline to provide direction for instructional employees, students and the school district community when participating in online social media activities. Whether or not an employee chooses to participate in a blog, wiki, online social network or any other form of online publishing or discussion it is his or her own decision. Free speech protects educators who want to participate in social media, but the laws and courts have ruled that schools can discipline teachers if their speech, including online postings, disrupts school operations. The X School District social media guidelines encourage employees to participate in online social activities.

Social media create new bullying issues for schools; Collier forum set for Monday - 0 views

  •
Both the Collier and Lee County school districts have bullying policies on their books. Both are similar, and define bullying as "systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more students or employees." But the Collier district is ready to take it a step further, and on Monday, the district will host a community forum on social media. When the school has an issue with social media, Blackmon said, the students are talked to individually by a guidance counselor and-or administrator. The Attorney General's Office also sends a representative to discuss the dangers of social media, adding the school will have an assembly for students at the end of the year on this issue.

Dominant in Japan, Softbank Now Aims at China - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
"China has been a notoriously difficult market to crack for overseas Web companies. Google, eBay and Yahoo, not to mention social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, have all struggled there, because of strong domestic competition as well as government blocking and censorship. But in its push into China, Softbank has avoided many of these headaches by focusing on e-commerce, local social networking sites and online games - sidestepping the difficulties of government censorship."
  •
This article makes me wonder whether Softbank can bring new media and social networking, broadband Internet, etc. to China and allow China to continue it's censorship practices... IV

Social Media Failure in Our School Districts - 0 views

  •
By now, we've all heard the concerns about social media in the K-12 setting. The fears of teachers revealing their personal lives of Facebook. The worry of what can be accessed and posted on YouTube, revealing the good, bad, and ugly of the 21st century classroom. Even ongoing tweets about both policy and practice in the classroom or the central office. The concern has grown so significant that many school districts have policies banning the use of social media, even erecting firewalls to ban access to sites like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter with LEA computers or through LEA-based Internet connections.

Free Twitter! Why Districts Must Embrace Social Media - 0 views

  •
The mainstream media loves to report on sexting, cyberbullying, inappropriate relationships, and other social media pitfalls that frighten parents and send school administrators running scared. These fears cause schools to maintain their years-old internet polices: Block social media sites. No one gets hurt. But innovative teachers across the country, when allowed, have embraced social media applications like Twitter and Facebook. They're using them to communicate with their students, to share relevant news, and to ask and answer questions. They're using them to connect students to resources around the world and create authentic global classrooms. And they're using them to move beyond the typical classroom website where " ... the missing piece of the design is the lack of interaction for the user. Facebook forces interaction and active learning."
