This study used an experiment embedded within a Web-based survey to examine the influence of contextual (i.e., face-to-face vs. online chat room discussion) and social-psychological factors on individuals' willingness to express opinions. In this experiment, respondents were asked whether they would be willing to express an opinion if they were placed in a face-to-face discussion group in one condition and in an online chat room discussion group in the other condition.

So what does this have to do with the psychology of cyberspace? There are two basic ways the internet tends to create division in one's life and identity. First, people tend to separate their online lives from their offline lives. You may have online companions, groups, and activities that are quite distinct from those you have in the face-to-face world.

Users often wish to participate in online groups anonymously, but misbehaving users may abuse this anonymity to spam or disrupt the group. Online teaching vs face to face teaching.

"I need to get off Facebook and write my paper": Plenty of students have seen those statuses posted by friends on Facebook when they were supposed to be studying. Some students even posted that particular status themselves. Facebook has become the biggest distraction for students when trying to get homework done.

Cybercrime is booming business. According to Symantec's newest Norton Cybercrime Report, the money involved with digital attacks is now almost as lucrative as the illegal drug trade - $388 billion last year. That includes productivity lost to cyber attacks, money corporations and individuals use to thwart cybercrime and direct cash losses associated with viruses, malware and identity theft.

As more communication up and down the line at work is done electronically, face-to-face discussion can easily fall by the wayside. While the speed and volume of communication increases with e-mail, voicemail and instant messaging, some of the dialogue and personal touch can start to disappear.

It compares success of industries and has various videos and articles on the topic. Also, watch the TED talk on the site, I found it to be most informative and useful.
