O'Hare makes two big distinctions between lectures and discussion-based learning, and how lectures do not encourage a community of active learning because students are not facing each other. However, when students are facing each other, it is much easier for a discussion to happen between the students. To make this possible, O'Hare discusses seating arrangements, lighting, blackboards/chalkboards, projectors, and desks that can properly satisfy student needs.
