ENGL307: Digital Writing

Definition: Digital writing is essentially writing that is not done with pen and paper. It is found on the World Wide Web and may include pictures and videos as well as text.

A really neat summary that breaks down the actual fair use law and analyzes it as it applies to movie reviews. pretty interesting and very useful.

This video explains the importance of flow when creating data flow charts. They explain that flow is extremely important when working with complex data and having to explain the content to those who might not understand and need to visualize the message easily.

New Media: This is Wikipedia's definition of new media, in which accessibility and interactive abilities are prominent factors. This page provides a history and definition of the term and includes the various uses and effects of new media.

"New media is a broad term in media studies that emerged in the latter part of the 20th century which refers to on-demand access to content any time, anywhere, on any digital device, as well as interactive user feedback, creative participation and community formation around the media content." This is a quick and easy resource to reference new media.

New Media: A very useful blog about new media and all aspects of it, including (but not limited to), those that Manovich discusses. The blog details the evolution of media and allows discussions about said subject.

This site is a blog where bloggers come to discuss issues about new media.  The range of discussion includes anything from the real meaning of digital to the debate between the written word like newspapers versus the internet.

NEW MEDIA This site gives a definition of what new media is and examples of technolgies that are considered new media.

Discussion Board Etiquette: This video provides all of the essential guidelines of discussion board etiquette, such as the use of standard English grammar and spelling, the proper manner in which to disagree, the proper use of emoticons, and how to react to negativity.

FLOW. This page talks specifically about the concept of flow and how designers can optimize it in their websites. I like this site because of the fact that it cites actual research done and how it clearly breaks down what designers need to do in order to achieve flow. 

MANOVICH. This essay makes a case, as it were, for video games as a viable new media and defends them against stereotyped ideas that consider video games to be pointless and a waste of time. 

Not really useful for understanding the basics of flow, but elegantly descriptive explanation of the concept of flow.

great video on the basics on forum netiquette. One tip this video gives is to to not post when you are tired or have had a bad day.

I liked how this site said that in an academic setting you should address comments as you would face to face, acknowledge the person who is speaking.

A humorous song that looks at how individuals look at and participate on the internet using the meme and self-referential and how to deal with it.

Copyright, Fair Use, and Creative Commons: A Youtube video assessing the impact of fair use and its cultural impact -- specifically, the impact of art upon other artists and how referencing and sometimes even imitating other works of art has helped shape art and culture as a whole. The video shows various examples of artworks that have used each other as references and is a good way to understand the importance behind this.

Discussion Board Etiquette This page provides several tips for message board posting etiquette from basic elements like providing a relevant title on a post to more serious issues such as staying away from posting about a personal business or product.

This website is from Stanford University. It has a great deal of infomation about fair use and other copyright issues. It has links to other useful information and including youtube
