NV Energy deal, legislation in Congress could help state develop solar power SolarReserve, a California energy company, is planning to build a 100-megawatt solar thermal power plant near Tonopah, and on Tuesday it announced that NV Energy had agreed to buy power from the plant. As Stephanie Tavares reported on the Las Vegas Sun's Web site, the plant is designed to use heat storage technology that will allow its steam turbines to run at night. The Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project is being vetted by the Bureau of Land Management. The company says it could break ground by 2011 and expects construction to last two years.

Chicago Utility to Test Distributed Solar | Cooler Planet News - 0 views

  • ComEd, the electric service provider arm of Exelon Corporation (which delivers electricity to about 70 percent of northern Illinois), is planning a distributed solar array that will involve outfitting 100 Chicago-area homes with solar photovoltaic panels, and retrofitting at least 50 of those with “smart” meters, net metering, battery backup and a grid-tied status that enables them to send unused electricity from their solar energy systems back to the grid. The aim, according to ComEd, is to convert each home into a “mini-utility” in an attempt to prove that individual homes can act as power generators, buying and selling electricity in real-time, according to ComEd Environmental and Marketing VP, Val Jensen.

Research Recap » Blog Archive » Solar Power Could Supply 69% of US Electricity by 2050 - 0 views

  •
A massive switch from coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear power plants to solar power plants could supply 69% of the US's electricity and 35% of its total energy by 2050, according to Scientific American. However, $420 billion in subsidies from 2011 to 2050 would be required to fund the infrastructure and make it cost-competitive, the publication says in "A Solar Grand Plan" presented in its January 2008 issue.

Five myths about green energy - 2 views

  • Yes, "green" energy has great emotional and political appeal. But before we wrap all our hopes -- and subsidies -- in it, let's take a hard look at some common misconceptions about what "green" means.

Wind Power in New York: All Hot Air? | celsias° - 0 views

  • "It really is renewable energy gone wrong," said the Franklin County district attorney, Derek P. Champagne, who began a criminal inquiry into the Burke Town Board last spring and was quickly inundated with complaints from all over the state about the wind companies. "It's a modern-day gold rush," he said.

Aerotecure International - Home - 0 views

  •
Aerotecture International seeks to radically transform the dominant paradigm of energy production and consumption around the globe. Blending the concepts of aerodynamics and architecture, Aeroturbines are wind electric turbines designed to be attached to buildings or integrated into the very form of buildings. With Aeroturbines, buildings and other structures will not only consume electricity, but produce it on-site.

The future of biofuels is not in corn - 0 views

  • The future of biofuels is not in corn, says a new report released today by Food & Water Watch, the Network for New Energy Choices, and the Vermont Law School Institute for Energy and the Environment. The corn ethanol refinery industry, the beneficiary of new renewable fuel targets in the proposed energy legislation as well as proposed loan guarantee subsidies in the 2007 Farm Bill, will not significantly offset U.S. fossil fuel consumption without unacceptable environmental and economic consequences.

Environmental Capital - WSJ.com : Burned by Biofuels: McCain, Other Politicos, Turn on Local Juice - 0 views

  • John McCain and more than a score of fellow Republicans called on the Environmental Protection Agency to scupper, or at least reconsider, the ethanol mandates passed in the last energy bill. The bill calls for a five-fold increase in U.S. ethanol production through 2022. President Bush reiterated the need for more “renewable fuels” in his Rose Garden climate speech last month.

  • Neuwing Energy Ventures, a New York-based marketer of energy-efficiency certificates, would perform an initial assessment of IBM customers' sprawling data centers -- the massive, air-conditioned facilities that store information and route anything from eBay purchases to e-mail. IBM would identify potential energy savings areas for its clients, and Neuwing would grant the IT firms certificates for the total megawatt-hours no longer needed to cool or operate the data center equipment. Each certificate would equal 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) per annum, said Rich Lechner, IBM's vice president for IT optimization. Clients could sell the certificates to utilities subject to state renewable portfolio standards, as well as sell to other companies that aim to reduce their carbon footprint through energy savings. The value of the energy efficiency certificates, historically in the $2-$10 range, is determined by the supply and demand for those certificates in each trading market.

  • America is in a hole and it's getting deeper every day. We import 70% of our oil at a cost of $700 billion a year - four times the annual cost of the Iraq war. I've been an oil man all my life, but this is one emergency we can't drill our way out of. But if we create a new renewable energy network, we can break our addiction to foreign oil. On January 20, 2009, a new President gets sworn in. If we're organized, we can convince Congress to make major changes towards cleaner, cheaper and domestic energy resources.

Google Solar Panel Project - 0 views

  • In October 2006, Google announced a commitment to solar energy production and launched the largest solar panel installation to date on a corporate campus in the United States. Google has installed over 90% of the 9,212 solar panels that comprise the 1,600 kilowatt project. Panels cover the rooftops of eight buildings and two newly constructed solar carports at the Googleplex (check out this fly-over video).

Flat Panel Technology Boosts Solar Efficiency - 0 views

  • Xtreme Energetics has investigated the possibility of using mechanical trackers to perform the same light-focusing duties as other solar array manufacturers have. However, HP’s transparent transistor can do the job electronically, rather than mechanically, and significantly reduce the costs of such an installation. Such a solar array is known as a concentrating photovoltaic (or CPV) solar array. To date, CPV arrays are fairly expensive and cannot store energy, making them less useful. They also work best in specific sections of the world — those with the highest levels of solar radiation, such as the southwest United States and northern Africa.
