EERE News: Sales of Compact Fluorescent Lights Jump to 20% of the Market - 0 views

  • Sales of Compact Fluorescent Lights Jump to 20% of the Market The sales of Energy Star-qualified compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) nearly doubled last year, according to the estimates of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In 2007, 290 million CFLs were sold, and the energy-saving bulbs now account for about 20% of the light bulb market in the United States. Energy Star-qualified CFLs use approximately 75% less energy and last up to 10 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.

Do CFLs cause headaches? - Green Daily - 0 views

As with the effect of low dose radiation, EM fields or climate change, we will probably never know. But we should be grateful to have the luxury to debate it, and even have research on it.

ESL Light Bulbs: Greener Than CFL, Cheaper Than LEDs | Green Gadgets | The Green Optimi... - 0 views

  •
Residential Lighting has invented a new type of light bulb, that claims green gains, even more green than the CFLs. The new technology is called ESL (electro-stimulated luminescence).

BSRIA looks into the impact of banning the traditional light bulb in favour of CFLs - 0 views

So far there are a lot of questions but few answers. It is worth recalling that the filament lamp went through about 50 years of development before reaching maturity. Although the perception is of more rapid progress today, we may have to wait until 2020 before CFLs reach their prime.

The Pyramid of Conservation | CleanTechies Blog - CleanTechies.com - 2 views

  • Whether they’re building a new house or improving a well-loved home, energy-conscious homeowners everywhere are trying to lower energy use and costs. Even with the best of intentions, however, consumers are overwhelmed by too much information, which causes many of them to give up long before they screw in their first CFL light bulb. To remedy this situation, Minnesota Power created the Pyramid of Conservation as a “cheat sheet” for consumers who want to live a more energy-efficient life.

Big LED Breakthrough at Purdue University Could Change the World : TreeHugger - 0 views

  •
The incandescent lightbulb that wastes 90% of the electricity as heat is dying, we all know that. But a new breakthrough in solid state lighting might also kill compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) faster than some expected. Scientists at Purdue University have figured out how to manufacture LED solid-state lights on regular metal-coated silicon wafers (more details below). What this means is: much lower costs.

Why Edison-style light bulbs aren't always bad - 0 views

  • Are we releasing more greenhouse gas emissions by using more fossil-fuelled heating to make up for the heat that we're not getting from CFLs and LEDs?
  • But if you're in a state or province that uses more emission-free hydroelectric power and nuclear power, then it might make sense to keep on using that Edison-style bulb during the winter.

EU industry unites to promote energy-saving lamps | Environment | Reuters - 0 views

  • BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Europe's lamp and electricity producers joined forces with the retail sector on Monday to encourage consumers to buy more energy-efficient light bulbs and help the European Union in its fight against climate change. An agreement signed by three pan-European industry associations aims to promote and support the distribution of Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) as an alternative to conventional incandescent lamps -- so consuming far less energy.

A Bright Idea: Introducing ESL Light Bulbs from Vu1 - 2 views

  •
"start up company Vu1 is adding another light bulb option (not to mention acronym) to the mix, the Electron Stimulated Luminescence (ESL) bulb. The Vu1 ESL innovation re-purposes technology from our tried and true friend, the cathode ray tube (CRT) television. ESL uses accelerated electrons to stimulate phosphor and create light, thus making the bulb surface glow."

Climate, Energy and Environment News from Latin America: 1.3 - 1.7.2011 | Amanda Maxwel... - 1 views

  • n 2010, thermal energy displaced hydro as the major source of energy generation for the Chilean Central Interconnected System.  Coal, natural gas, and diesel supplied over 50% of energy consumed while hydropower accounted for 48%.  This trend is expected to continue in 2011 if current water shortage conditions persist. (El Mercurio, 1/4/11)  Last year’s drought created a 26% increase in thermal generation as compared to 2009.
  • The Regional Energy Efficiency Strategy initiative led by Bun-ca has reported an energy savings of 9368 MWh over the past six years, equivalent to 4992 tons of carbon dioxide, by working with 190 companies in the industrial and commercial sectors to become more energy efficient.   Recently UNEP’s En.lighten study estimated that Costa Rica could save 276,000 MWh and $27.6 million per year if they changed all light bulbs to CFLs.  The cost of this change was estimated to be $22.63 million.  (El Financiero CR, 1/3/11)
  • The Mexican government is planning to invest four billion dollars to build a one thousand megawatt renewable energy storage facility in Northern Mexico.   The facility will use a special kind of sodium sulfide batteries for the project which is expected to be completed in the next six years.  (Clean Techies, 1/6/11)

The Energy Blog: LED Lights Reduce Energy Consumption 48% in Cree Headquarters - 0 views

  •
The savings claimed here are against CFL, FL and HPS - not tungsten! Cree, Inc, a manufacturer of LED solid-state lighting components, released the results of the first phase of the conversion of its Durham headquarters to LED lighting, which has resulted in the use of 48% less energy than the lights they replaced and plans to convert all lighting at the headquarters and manufacturing facility to LED lighting.
