This article does a great job of summarizing the history of geriatric NPs role in care, the development education for geriatric NPs beginning with the first program in 1966 and the unmet demand for nurses trained in geriatrics.
Briefly describes how GNP is no longer continued since 2014, and that GNP can only be renewed by those who already obtained the GNP. AGNP combines both adults and geriatric population. This is ironic because ANCC still recognizes that there are needs for providers who specializes in our geriatric population just like how pediatrics, but they discontinued GNP.
I found this article to be very interesting in that it highlights the importance of transitioning and caring for the geriatric population. As part of my AGACNP program and future career i will be working with many elderly patients.
These are the Adult Gero Acute Care NP competencies that were developed by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) in 2012. Interesting that these were only developed 3 years ago!
