The Joop Swart Masterclass The Joop Swart Masterclass has been organized by World Press Photo every year since 1994 and has established itself as one of the most prestigious events of its kind. Its goal is to bring together some of the most experienced individuals in photojournalism with 12 young, promising photographers to share and pass on their knowledge and experience. Top of photography The first decade of the masterclass has shown that its participants are destined to be the best of the best. Our objective is to help them progress on the road toward professional maturity in terms of both theory and practice. The Joop Swart Masterclass is named after World Press Photo's late chairman, who was a passionate supporter of young photographic talent.

Lewis and Clark played catch during their trek to the Pacific, and men organized the first game just outside of Brooklyn as congress debated a fugitive slave law. The game quickly grabbed the nation, and game scores dotted newspapers beside news of Sherman's march through Georgia. This article talks about the history and myths of baseball throughout history.

The recent D4 project was a terrific project for the studio, made more so by the company I shared shooting it. Bill Frakes did his usual wonderful sports stills, but also filmed a beautifully evocative video of Istanbul. Take a look at his site, Straw Hat Visuals. Corey Rich once again defies gravity in his adventure sports video work, seen here.  Matthias Hangst shot amazing action, and Vincent Munier once again took on difficult and daunting landscapes. Humbled and honored to be in their company. Bill Frakes and I, especially, go back a long ways. He is one of the truly significant standard bearers in the history of sports photojournalism.
