In 1984 Sanyo launched into the PC market with the model MBC-550 PC to undercut the price of the recently released IBM PC. Although the MBC-550 used the same CPU family as the IBM, had similar architecture to the IBM and ran Microsoft DOS and popular programs, it wasn't 100% IBM compatible and was driven to obscurity with dozens of additional 'almost compatible' computers. Sanyo's various divisions have manufactured numerous types of equipment including batteries of many sizes and types, household appliances, air conditioners, semiconductors and cellular phones to name a few. Across the generations, Sanyo has had a technology lead with many of the products it has produced because of their considerable R&D initiatives and capacity to quickly move from prototype to production.
During 1995 Sanyo produced it's 1st digital camera and within a few years controlled 30% of the world marketplace under the Sanyo brand and private branded for several others. Sanyo continued to produce component parts such as the Liquid crystal display screen for several digital camera manufacturers including Kodak. Also in the 1990's Sanyo entered into the LCD projector sector and rose to number two in LCD projector sales, with 15% of the market segment.
