Makram Mohamed Ahmed, pro-regime head of the press syndicate, has been forced to resign under pressure of journalists following the #Jan25 revolution.

Megawer striking back with the 24th General Union, devoted solely to the tax collectors, so as to withdraw the carpet from beneath Abu Eita and the Free Union. The new state-backed union include at least two of the former strike leaders that Megawer managed to coopt: Makram Labib and Ezzat Shedid. The two had always demonstrated the most compromising attitude throughout the Hussein Hegazi sit-in and later.

Makram Labib, who was always the "weakest link" and most vacilating among the strike leaders, and who was expelled from the Higher Committee leadership before the announcement of the free union in december 2008, has now officially become the right hand man of Megawer.
