Thinking about a lack of thinking - 0 views

  • Thoughtfulness only enters in when I wonder about the meaning of the work.
  • Can you dig below the surface, the ‘cover’ of ‘coverage’ to ponder what underlies it? Typically, however, both teachers and students need merely follow through, in a disciplined way, to complete all their assigned tasks.
  • More content and more mental work can never make people more thoughtful, if the lessons bypass thought in favor of mere content mastery. Indeed, lots of knowledge without thoughtfulness makes matters worse.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Indeed, the claim that “I have to cover all the content” is thoughtless in another way. Look at the language: it is egocentric, cast only in terms of what you will do. But teaching is not about what you will do; I am interested in what the student will be able to do of value as a result of your teaching, because that is all that matters.
  • The thought-provoking issue here is that most educators agree with these thinkers – but then fail to see that when their work deviates from what they assented to. The truth about thoughtful teaching is accepted, then continually ignored. Critical thinking is praised as a goal, but the work assigned often doesn’t demand it.
  • I have never met a teacher who wanted to stifle thoughtfulness. But I have met thousands of teachers who do not realize that their methods of teaching and measuring learning may unwittingly stifle thoughtfulness. Your students can only be thoughtful if you model thoughtful questioning of the content and if the curriculum makes them thoughtfully probe the content and its meaning, not just learn it.

Very interesting article by Grant Wiggins (of Understanding by Design) regarding the absence of thought in education today. He comments on the thoughtlessness of pacing guides and the need to cover content, as well as the shortcomings of standards-based learning. Very thought provoking!

The Innovative Educator: 10 BYOT / BYOD Back to School Basics - 0 views

  • What’s important for 21st century educators to remember is that when it comes to the tools and resources, you don’t have to be the expert. Share your learning goals with students and speak to them about the tools and resources they like best to meet those goals. You’ll learn from them and they’ll learn from each other when it comes to what to use. In the meantime, your job is to help them to become lifelong learners using the tools they own, love, and need for success in the world.

Good to think about when looking at the upcoming BYOD year. Suggestions of tools and apps for different situations. The ending paragraph is especially important!

Developing Responsible and Autonomous Learners: A Key to Motivating Students - 0 views

  • Having choices allows children to feel that they have control or ownership over their own learning. This, in turn, helps them develop a sense of responsibility and self-motivation.
  •
American Psychological Association study regarding motivation of students. The question of why students seem to take less responsibility of their own learning as they grow older is addressed, as well as how teachers can help students develop the skills to make good choices and become autonomous learners.

Khan Academy Blends Its YouTube Approach With Classrooms - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • Ms. Tavenner says she believes that computers cannot replace teachers. But the computer, she recognizes, can do some things a teacher cannot. It can offer personal feedback to a whole room of students as they work. And it can give the teacher additional class time to do more creative and customized teaching.
  • “Combining Khan with that kind of teaching will produce the best kind of math,” she argued. “Teachers are more effective because they have a window into the student’s mind.”
  • In class we use Khan Academy every day. As our homework our teacher sends us a video from Khan Academy and our homework is to blog about the video if we understand it or not, and then make an example. I have learned at a much faster pace this trimester, compared to a traditional class. The video simplify the idea down to something as simple as a quarter to learn about probability. I have found it as such a great learning tool to help me succeed.
  •
An interesting story about how the Khan Academy program is being used to help 9th-grade math students. The highlighted section (Ms. Tavenner's comments) explain very well one of the benefits of combining this type of learning with more traditional instruction. The comment on Dec. 8 by the Michigan student is also enlightening.
