Why Flickr Commons? (and why Wikimedia Commons is very different) - 0 views

  • We’ve even started to move some photographic collections that were acquired as ‘archives’ into ‘objects’ in their own right
  • And photography is becoming an important marker of what we do at the Powerhouse
  • The Wikimedia Commons is, currently, a pool of images which can be used for many purposes
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • However without visibly active community around the images they exist without a clear ‘intended purpose’
  • For us, the overall community effect of Flickr and the deep engagement by a small but passionate group of Flickr users, has been the most positive result for us.
  • combative social norms
  • We have research that this actually increases sales

indicommons» Blog Archive » Geolocating the First World War with Nationaal Ar... - 0 views

  • Nationaal Archief has incorporated the use of Flickr as a standard feature for public presentation and metadata generation
  • online tool aimed at collecting geographical metadata on a selection of photos from World War I
  • for most of these photos the locations are unknown
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • mashup of two data streams: a subset of Nationaal Archief’s Flickr photos and Open Street Map data
  • A new and simple website was developed as a game “shell” for the mashup
  • The game is simple: select a photo, study it, and add it to the (suspected) right location on the map, adding an “argument” for that location (”I recognize that bell tower in the background”) or even a photo of that same location today
  • Earlier locations can be overruled by every new player, but selection of the “right” location (some degree of uncertainty will always remain) is in hands of the jury: every month, from a pool of the most frequent players a jury selects a winner
  • wins large reproduction of a WWI photo

  • Currently only very few of our photographs are geotagged, but this functionality certainly offers some very interesting possibilities for the future
