The Academic Standards division is responsible for the development and implementation of the statewide expectations for educational achievement known as the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards. The state standards identify the knowledge and skills that are to be mastered by all students by the end of a grade level or grade band, help define the requirements for course credit and graduation from high school, and guide educators in the adoption and design of curricula. Student mastery of the standards is measured through state and local assessments.

Operation Respect is a non-profit organization working to assure each child and youth a respectful, safe and compassionate climate of learning where their academic, social and emotional development can take place free of bullying, ridicule and violence. Founded by Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter, Paul & Mary, the organization disseminates educational resources that are designed to establish a climate that reduces the emotional and physical cruelty some children inflict upon each other by behaviors such as ridicule, bullying and-in extreme cases-violence. It is a unique organization that provides a gateway to broad scale adoption of school-based character education as well as social and emotional learning (SEL) programs.

Educators across the nation have long declared the importance of family involvement in children's education. Considering the large amount of time children spend outside of school, up to 87% of waking hours, it is easy to see how families have a profound impact on children's educational lives. Families dramatically influence the degree to which children are engaged in school and how they identify themselves as learners. A strong family-school partnership will improve both academic and behavioral outcomes for children.
