From Knowledgeable to Knowledge-able: Experiments in New Media Literacy - 0 views

  •
It took tens of thousands of years for writing to emerge after speech, thousands more before the printing press was invented, and a few hundred more for the telegraph to arrive. Today, new ways of relating are constantly created and a new communication medium emerges every time someone creates a web application-a Flickr here, a Twitter there. How can we use new media to foster the kinds of communication and community we desire in education? This presentation will discuss both successful and unsuccessful attempts to integrate emerging technologies into the classroom to create a rich virtual learning environment.

Pest Control Information for School Kids and Teachers - PestWorldforKids.org - 0 views

This site provides resources and games explaining to elementary students what we consider to be "pests".

Just got this in my email. I could see some really fun, funny public service announcements -- cross curricular project for science and technology. This is what they sent me: "The contest challenges students in grades 4 through 8 to use their biology and entomology knowledge, as well as their creativity, to create educational public service announcements (PSAs) that discuss the health and property risks posed by household pests. The grand prize winning entry will receive $3,000 for their school's science department! We know that this award could mean a lot to one of the many schools in the country that are being forced to cut budgets and programs in this difficult economy. As a non-profit organization, NPMA is committed to science education, and never promotes specific products or services. I know that Cool Cat Teachers covers a wide range of topics, but we are hoping that the many science teachers who read your content would be interested in the contest for their schools. We would deeply appreciate your help in spreading the word about this fun and educational contest. The press release below has more information on the contest rules and details. Additional information, including sample PSAs and lesson plans for creating PSAs, are available at www.PestWorldForKids.org."

Flat World Knowledge LLC - 0 views

Free textbooks will be available beginning Jan '09. Not sure what grade levels this will be available to (just college?).
  •
Open source textbooks - this is a movement in that direction.
  •
Interesting tidbit in their press release this week: "Flat World has announced 17 new author titles under contract. Flat World's in-classroom beta test gets underway this week, with 20 participating colleges and universities nationwide." Open Textbooks may be closer -- this model is a more hybridized version. If we had a "wiki to print" tool or technology, then we could literally have grassroots teachers writing and creating textbooks together. This is interesting to follow

Andrew Hargadon: Pursuing science in and out of the Ivory Towers - 0 views

  •
This is an interesting article from Andrew Hargadon (yes, interestingly he is related to Steve Hargadon who started Classroom 2.0.) He makes a great point that is so salient to many professions: "So here we are, with pressing social and environmental problems, and a system that has undermined science's ability to lead in the changes we desperately need.

Giving Feedback Shouldn't be Boring - And it doesn't have to be by @Hubert_AI - 2 views

You put down the work, figure out questions, deciding appropriate scales, thinking through how to phrase the questions, rephrase them 3 times more, and then, finally, input everything into your favourite survey tool and press send."
