Best Strategies for Eliminating Elementary Student Math Misconceptions - 0 views

  •
Eliminating math misconceptions is difficult and merely repeating a lesson or extra practice will not help. Telling students were they are mistaken will not work either. Recognizing student misconceptions and immediately focusing on the misconception is important. Providing guiding questions using inductive reasoning is the best approach, along with the use of writing prompts which help reveal further student misconceptions.

Why use technology to Teach Science and Math? - 0 views

  •
As many of you may have discovered, I also found that many of my previous colleagues have little use for technology for teaching. They are mired in excuses such as using technology is cheating, students learn best through lecture, the stresses of NCLB makes it too difficult to do anything but have students memorize facts to pass the tests, etc.

The Use of Digital Technologies in the Classroom - 0 views

  •
Today's college students, often referred to as the "digital generation," use an impressive assortment of technological tools in a wide variety of ways. However, the findings reported here suggest that students prefer more traditional instructional technology for effective engagement and learning. Faculty members, however, prefer the use of course-learning technology offered by their universities or publishers. In addition to this potential mismatch between preferences of students and teachers, the research finds that there are vast differences in preferences and usage across disciplines, in particular, business and economics instructors and students having stronger technology preferences than instructors and students of the fine arts and life sciences.

Investigating the Nature of Science - 0 views

  •
The Scientific Method, as taught in schools, is a false process and a oversimplification of the way scientists actually work, along with missing the point of how to conduct scientific investigations. A real understanding of the Nature of Science comes from student personal experience, using simple problem-solving processes that can be discussed and analyzed. Using the Nature of Science as process for investigating problems helps eliminate many common misconceptions students have about science facts.

Va. Expands Costly 'Portfolio' Tests to More Categories of Challenged Students - washingtonpost.com - 0 views

  •
Public schools have begun using portfolio style assessments for individuals in special education, and those who have high test anxiety. It appears these tests are proving successful and are able to fully assess the individuals learning and knowledge of subject matter. The portfolios are a pricey investment for the public schools at $500,000 for the school year and numerous teacher hours spent grading them; but who should put a price on education? I wonder if more schools will begin using portfolios for all assessments over the standarized test?

Psst! Need the Answer to No. 7? Click Here. - NYTimes.com - 0 views

Incredibly interesting article about the use of technology and how it can positively and negatively effect learning. As stated in our discussions earlier this week, the use of technology can - at times - undermine the real classroom experience. In the case of sites which are explained in this article, I think it highlights the need and importance of 'real' classroom learning to help with questions and curb cheating.
