At the beginning of this video, David Wiley describes the textbook as the "imposed curriculum". Open textbooks, on the other hand, enable educators to improve the course as they see fit.

"Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut today announced a joint pilot program between the University System of Ohio and Flat World Knowledge, the largest publisher of free and open college textbooks for students worldwide. The program will allow 1,000 Ohio students to receive digital textbooks for free."

The story explains that the language affecting textbook adoption would replace the state's formal review committees-which include lay citizens, teachers, teacher supervisors and a school board member-with a trio of subject-matter experts appointed by the state education commissioner. School districts would appoint teachers and content supervisors to rate the practical usability of the texts recommended by the state's experts, the story says.

"I would consider it - although, given that one of my main goals right now is to get promoted to Full Professor, I need to focus on research that is published in academic journals rather than write a textbook. "

"Dr. Mason, who teaches economics at the University of North Florida, believes his students are just as intelligent as they've always been. But many of them don't read their textbooks, or do much of anything else that their parents would have called studying."
