I really wanted to post a little timeline. Earlier I actually started typing a comment suggesting that perhaps Da Vinci used the same model for both paintings, then erased it rather than posting it… I forced myself to 'bite my tongue'. The fact is that I am not used to letting students take ownership of their learning in this way. I want to 'teach' them… isn't that my job? But if I had put that "perhaps Da Vinci used the same model" post in after the 5th or 6th comment, would the other comments have followed?

As BBCs iPlayer service gets more and more popular, UK ISPs start complaining about bandwidth uses. Is this the first wake-up call?

I started podcasting four months ago when I launched the first episode of Lifehack Live as part of Lifehack.org's podcast series. Although I'd been listening to podcasts for a couple of years already, and had some experience behind the deck in a recording studio (granted, it was 14 years ago), I really had no idea how to produce a podcast that people would want to listen to. Backboard automates the process of getting feedback and approval on all your projects-it can handle almost any type of file, but it's especially good with mixed graphical and text media. It only takes a minute to start a Backboard. Upload the file you would like feedback on, choose a security level, and select the email addresses of one or more reviewers. Each reviewer will receive a link to your file, where they can come and leave feedback on your document. This wiki is intended to promote discussion of the rise of mass, collaborative creativity, of which Wikipedia itself is a prime example. And it is intended to start a process of collaborative writing and editing of a book: We-think: the power of mass creativity. To get the discussion going I offer the draft text of We-think. The argument of We-think is that creativity is invariably collaborative and that opportunities for largely self-organising creative collaboration are going up the whole time. So I decided to apply that thinking to this book. I have two main aims.

As you gear up in whatever way that you do, I selfishly wanted to jot down a few reminders that I'd be telling myself if I were about to get started.

We watched an example of a student-produced film about the bombing of Hiroshima and discussed how we would assess it. It was difficult to say since we weren't the ones that gave the assignment, but it got the conversation started. Our speaker said that in many cases a scoring guide (i.e., rubric) isn't even provided, or the scoring guide focuses exclusively on the mechanics of the product (e.g., number of images, number of PowerPoint slides). Too often, she says, the product is simply turned in without the kind of serious assessment that we usually give to more traditional writing assignments. I've observed this over the years as well, and have often felt like technological glitz has been substituted for high quality content. This is especially common with teachers who may not be very technosavvy themselves and may be more likely to be overly impressed with the polish that modern ditial tools can impart without any effort on the part of the student.

There's a long history of comics in the classroom, and the list of references at the end of this article is a great starting point for learning about this concept. While there's still resistance to this medium being used in education - whether by staff or students - there is also a growing movement to use every valuable tool available. Comics have some great uses in the classroom and in a variety of curricula. From pre-readers to high school students, from English to ESL to Science and Math, comics can help students analyze, synthesize and absorb content that may be more difficult when presented in only one way.
