Butyric acid (or butanoic acid) is a short-chain fatty acid that is hypothesised to serve a number of positive effects in the gastrointestinal tract. It is a fatty acid produced by the beneficial bacteria in the gut when dietary fibre is broken down. Butyric acid can also be found in plant oils and animal fats. However, the amount of butyric acid present in foods like ghee and butter is tiny in comparison to the amount produced in the stomach. It is well-known for its ability to support digestive health, minimise illness risk, reduce inflammation, and boost general health.
