In this article, the author goes beyond the definition of Communities of Practice, but he explains each key component of CoP. The author explains the three traits of CoPs, the stages of development, and how to operate a CoP. However, I feel the first two keys (the traits and the stages of development) are important in understanding what CoP is.

"Connectivism is not static". This article describes the goal and attributes of connectivism. It emphasizes the importance of gaining knowledge by connecting and sharing information in a social setting like the classroom.

Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age by George Siemens was reprinted in an online textbook called "Foundations of Learning and Instructional Design Technology." In the article, Siemens explains that the three oldest learning theories were based on a time when we lacked technology. He goes on to discuss the limitations each of the theories has on the individual that is exposed to technology. He then discusses connectivism and how it impacts learning in the digital-age.

This article looks at the effects of personal learning networks on students. It describes a research study that found PLNs help students to get together to work through information and understand the content on a new level. The study used tools that are mostly free and online such as Google Docs.

My biggest a-ha moment from this article is the importance of seeing connections between fields, ideas, and concepts. Too often we work in silos and don't look around to see what other people are doing, even in our own organizations.

The reasons range from finding great resources, to sharing ideas, to getting support when needed. As one contributor to the site so succinctly stated, "professional development often leaves a lot to be desired. Teachthought.com is an excellent resource. This particular resource is titled "10 Reasons why Every Teacher Needs a P.L.N." This page is filled with multiple resources at a glance to help better learn and understand the theories behind PLN.

A lengthy article, but it does a good job of explaining the theories behind PLNs while also providing case studies of how PLNs benefited teachers. It connects PLNs with connectivism as well.

The focus of this article is that the foundation of CoPs and learning is social participation. Various scenarios are discussed where CoPs are formed, even informally, like students on a playground. This qualitative study explores the experiences of PK-12 teachers using PLNs for professional growth. The research questions focus on how P-12 teachers describe their PLNs, what teachers learn from PLNs and how they believe PLN activities affect their teaching, and how teachers perceive their participation in PLNs affect their students' learning.

When the community of practice is thrown into the mix, it allows teachers to be even more comfortable with different styles and ideas through informal professional interactions. This article has a big emphasis on policy changes, which is an important part of daily life as a teacher.

The article opens with the idea of teachers being or becoming life long learners to achieve success, satisfaction, and empowerment in their position. This is then promoted by the idea of using PLNs to participate in the role of life long learner. PLNs are then described through a variety of scenarios including a general definition as well as additional adjective descriptions and elaborations such as engaging, exciting, and virtual friendships. How to develop a PLN follows the definition with the gains or benefits of forming PLNs wrapping up this resource. When reading through the gains it is clear that learning is the overall anticipated outcome whether it be: anytime, anywhere, with anyone, self directed, informal, formal, collaborative, or life long.
