Nielsen report on social networking's new global footprint - 0 views

  •
I found the Nielson report cited in several of the articles I reviewed and decided to check it out. The Nielson report typically cites was published in 2009 and so instead I retrieved a more recent (2011) report on the state of social media. This is a fascinating graphic display of the synthesis and major findings of research on the use of social media both in the United States and globally. This is important as we consider the needs and possibilities of using the connected learning theories reviewed in our reading. The data gathered reflects a continued rise in access of social networks and blogs across a wide variety of demographics. Information such as 4 out of 5 active Internet users now visit SN and blogs cannot be ignored as we consider the impact this has on instructional design and education technology applications.

Building a dynamic online learning community among adult learners - 0 views

  •
This article examines the nature of learning communities constructed among a diverse group of adult learners in an online graduate-level 16 week instructional design course. Researchers analyzed course artifacts, survey responses, online profiles and project evaluations to explore communities formed in an online setting that involves 21 international participants. Data was collected through observing recorded audio webcasts and chat discussions, and analysis of student profiles, artifacts, survey responses, and course evaluations. The authors found evidence of community building without significant differences associated with race, culture, or gender. Instead, evidence for community building was more dependent on active participation, forming of shared identify, and the establishment of social network. The course design allowed individuals to work and communicate collaboratively. The authors admit that the study is narrow in scope with a small number of participants, making it unreliable for wider contexts.

While searching for CoP's for Macintosh Computers and Adobe Software for educators, I came across this site and felt that this CoP presented by Slide Share would be a good resource for CoPs through the use of slides, since I see this tool being used in Moodle.

I really enjoyed this slideshow. It definitely takes away from the monotony of reading PDF articles. The slides provide enough information for users to understand CoP.

Networks: Gurus and Grasshoppers: A Community of Practice in Graphic Design - 1 views

  •
I'm in love with world of graphic design. How many people can say that they teach their craft, I can. That said, I needed to find a CoP that does just that. Although this is from the University of Brighton it provides support with young aspiring graphic designers.
  •
That is great! I would love to teach more of what I love to do. This is a great article that explores CoP within a specific group of learners interested in the same topic (graphic designing).

Communities of Practice and organizational performance - 1 views

  •
This article discusses how communities of practice can help organizations to improve their performance. They can do this by their members sharing and learning together. They draw their conclusions from looking at seven organizations that have created and used communities of practice.
  •
I have to confess--I found this difficult to read. It just did not hold my attention. But I did like the chart where they showed the different organizations and how they have used their communities of practice. It was well laid out and easy to understand!
