I tend to keep up to date with Deaf culture by visiting this site often. I decided to post this article showing the view some Deaf have on the evolving technology of cochlear implants. I agree that technology has allowed for incredible growth and development of all kinds of things including education and resources for the disabled, but sometimes do we push it to far?

This article discusses the use of communities of practice for university teachers as the demand for research increases. Cites how many professors got into teaching to teach, not to do research, and are either leaving the profession or joining communities of practice to develop research skills and get help to meet the research demands. The bottom of page 972 talks about the challenges for those who are not well trained in research. The bottom of 973 talks about what it takes to change a teaching culture to a research culture. 979 has a useful table on what it looks like for education faculties to build their research capability.

I believe that a lot of individuals enter the university teaching profession thinking they are only going to teach! So many of my professor friends have found that they have to write grants and build in their yearly incomes just to stay employed! Thanks for sharing!

This article provides a great overview of the potential of adaptive learning. Adaptive learning is becoming more than just a buzz word as of late.

I came across the acronym MOOC in the resources and the meaning did not immediately jump out to me. This article discusses the quick rise and perceived fall of MOOC's from 2012 to present. It also discusses their continued importance and changes that may occur.

In this post by Stephen Downes, he discusses the generations of technologies and how this coincides with the development of elearning. The last portion of this article brings it back to connectivism.

My go to website for all things higher education. This website supplies great current articles on the entire higher education field. It also posts job openings. I use this website to stay current will all higher education news across the USA.

This article was great in that they did a case study on the schoolteachers' workplace learning. What they found is that there should not be boundaries that defines how educators learn and practice.

This website by Phil and Heather Hodkinson provides a powerful case study on Schoolteachers' and Workplace Learning, and examines the similarities and differences between classroom and workplace learning in regards to CoP.

This is not a published article, but rather an example of an active Community of Practice. I like visuals, so this was helpful to see an operational COP and explore the different aspects available to its members.

This link is a slideshare. The slideshare begins by describing what a PLN is and the benefits of creating one including the facts that are flexible, personal and practical. It also talks about them happening in real time, allowing instant access to people and information and also giving access to expertise in any field. It goes on to describe the two types of PLN's collaborative tools and information gathering. The article then provides a list of possible tools and good resources to be included in your PLN.

This article is from Ebscohost and does require users to log into Albertson's Library before accessing. This paper looks at shared social capital and what it means for teachers. It also looks at the difference and the benefits for teachers using online vs offline professional development resources as it relates to Facebook.

Hap Aziz, director of the School of Technology and Design at Rasmussen College, explores what he terms the "five key components" to approaching educational technology.

I thought this article was interesting, about the communities of practice because it was discussing who you interact with can shape your learning and thoughts. If you create a community of practice for a specific group, your learning is shaped by those who are in that community. It was discussing a teachers community of practice, how most of them collaborate with their own colleagues and therefore share and learn from each other which them reflects on their teaching.

This document is a compilation of readings and resources for a community of practice. It includes infographics as well as summaries of information of theories of COP's.

This article had mentioned a good point about communities of practice: not all communitites are communities of practice. They gave the example of a neighborhood, it is a community where people are living, but they are not necessarily practicing a common interest. However if you have a neighborhood watch group to watch and protect the surrounding homes, them that would be a community of practice because they have the same goal and are working together. It stated that learning can be the reason for the group to come together, or it can be an outcome of someone's actions.

This article explains that technology is the main reason for learning networks. We have been learning online, through websites and interactions between people for a long time now. It states that learning together with other people online can be much more engaging, entertaining and worth our time.

This article examines PLEs with a working definition of "a combination of social media-enabled systems, applications, and services which help learners to take control of their learning by aggregating, manipulating, and creating digital contents and learning artifacts, and sharing them with others." It advocates for an atmosphere of learning that is far different than the traditional sense; one that is driven by student-led activities and exploration.

Some of this article seemed a bit outdated for me. I realize that it was written in 2002 but it dated itself in the writing. What I did like was how they acknowledge that Instructional and Educational technology are slightly different. I did not know the difference until 541.

A quick view of how technology is changing our world making it much smaller by allowing for global communication that is changing how we network and learn. The article includes two list of 10 different tips for using and establishing PLNs.

This is a great resource when thinking through joining a PLN. The tips are simple and descriptive. I was impressed with this piece. I think the best tip was "Be an active participant". Great advice.

First, I am struck that this 7 year old video is still current in light of all that changes with knowledge. Second, Siemens explains Network, Node and their importance to Connectivism. He also addresses this need for us to remain current. He mentions that more important and quicker means of staying current is through our Networks. He further mentions the point that if we don't keep up with what is going on in education we become obsolete. Lastly, he mentioned dropping links that direct you away from your knowledge quest.

I liked his comment about staying current in our own education, learning and teachings. Being connected to the internet/network helps us be current, up to date and we are able to do that because we can connect to the network 24/7.

I have noticed a few YouTube links, which concerns me a bit that I never thought of looking there myself. Clearly I need to extend my "web," as it could lead me to resources such as this. It was refreshing to hear the information presented rather than comb through a long article. Sticking point for me was referencing the need to stay current. I am hoping that this course, as well as others in this program, will significantly help with that.

Technology is changing the face of education. The Internet and communication technologies are rapidly expanding learning networks for educators and students alike. The article explains why learning no longer needs to be linear but can take on whatever shape suits the learner.
