Professor Encourages Students to Pass Notes During Class -- via Twitter - Wired Campus ... - 2 views

I love this idea.  It's a college class, but it could easily be adapted to a high school environment.  The back channel in online education provides a rich source for learning.  If this could be implemented in brick and mortar with twitter, then this would be great.

Matt Brown (PrincipalBrown) on Twitter - 0 views

  •
This Twitter account belongs to a Principal at Kurt Hahn EL School in Brooklyn New York.  While this may not be thought of as using, social networking in education, I say it is.  Education is not just about classrooms and lessons, it is about about community and parents as well.  Keeping the community, parents, and students up to date on happenings at the school and profiling teachers and student achievements is an important part of education.  This is a great way to use Twitter.

This is another good use of a blog.  It's for second grade students and the student work has been taken down, but scope is great.  Exposing students to reflection and blogging at a young age is tremendous.  Hopefully, it starts a life-long journey of writing and reflective, critical, and creative thinking.

This is a teacher's blog that is used to keep parents informed about classroom events.  This is, maybe, an overlooked yet simple and effective use of social networking in education.

Once A Teacher - PLN - 9 views

  •
A good article on what type of people and tools can constitute a PLN.  It gives some good examples and provides some great tools that could be included in anyone's PLN.  It embeds a youtube video in it that enhances my understanding of a PLN.  It also helps me to differentiate between a PLN and a CoP.

Connectivism and Connective Knowledge - YouTube - 2 views

  •
This is a video discussion as part of a online course on connectivism.  Taken by itself, it is a little obscure, but taken in the context of EDTECH543 and in an attempt to understand connectivism, it was immensely helpful to me.  The video centers around the nine dots puzzle and the how the solution to it is a perfect example of connectivism.

The future of e-learning is social learning - 1 views

  •
This slide share touches on what social learning is.  It suggests that people learn a great deal of information on their own and in their own manners--sometimes just by talking to others.  It focuses on the need for a tool or web software that promotes social and informal learning but still takes into account data privacy and security.

Personal Learning Networks Are Virtual Lockers for Schoolkids | Edutopia - 14 views

  •
While this site leans towards the how-to aspect of a PLN, I found it illuminating simply for the fact that the students described in this article create a PLN for each project.  It emphasizes the fact that a PLN is personal and not the same for everybody.  PLNs are personal, can be permanent or temporary, and exist for the sake of the person to learn.

Personal Learning Network - 2 views

  •
This article is fairly specific.  It helped understand the difference between a CoP and a PLN.  Primarily it talks about what learning is and how a PLN can help and how learning can come in a PLN.  It elaborates that a PLN is something that we have.  It is our connections that we make and, while not explicit, it emphasizes that we feel ownership in the PLN.

Communities of Practice (Lave and Wenger) CoPs - 17 views

  •
This is a more technical site that better describes CoPs.  It talks about what a CoP is and what the requirements are.  I particularly like that the it states that the learning is not necessarily the primary reason for the existence of a CoP.  It also gives some sources for further study.
