Majchrzak, A., Faraj, S., Kane, G. C., & Azad, B. (2013). The contradictory influence of social media affordances on online communal knowledge sharing.Journal of Computer‐Mediated Communication, 19(1), 38-55.

Social media has allowed for cross communication, knowledge sharing and user generated content in organizations. The authors describes the existence of a technology affordance which is how the users' intentions and technology create an opportunity for action. Social media allows for decentralization of knowledge and practices both formally and informally. It allows for the creation of new knowledge and new perspectives as well. The author, however, posits that social media can also hinder productive discussions and knowledge distribution. "Group think" and misrepresentation of opinions by distorted sample are examples of negative influences of social media on knowledge (e.g. a small but "vocal" set of teachers may lead a discussion on Common Core that is not reflective of most teachers).
