This is a faculty teaching guide produced by College STAR (Supporting Transition, Access, and Retention). College STAR was a grant-funded project dedicated to providing materials to help college campuses be more welcoming and attentive to the needs of a wider variety of college student learners. This guide is specifically written from a UDL (Universal Design for Learning) standpoint, which means that the resources provided here will be especially accessible for students with differing needs.

Twitter is used as a way for students to ask questions and comment on content. Although this is in a college setting, this can be applied to a high school setting. A class can have a specific hashtag for asking questions or commenting on content.

This examines whether the college catalog and language therein constitute a legally binding contract between college and student. This page has many case studies that point to successful use of Facebook with college students. This is a page from a company so you can have some idea as to the motivation. To put this into perspective this is the only company that is financially supported by the Gates foundation. In my opinion they are motivated by more than profit but by helping schools and students make connections.

Development of connectivist instructional tools used for college teaching. The theory can lead to learner-centered education. Instructors can step back and bring learners to the forefront. "Connectivism is the integration of principles explored by chaos, network, and complexity and self-organization theories."

I also found this article and liked it. As I read it I was trying to think of ways to apply to secondary education instead of higher education. Good work.

I love this idea.  It's a college class, but it could easily be adapted to a high school environment.  The back channel in online education provides a rich source for learning.  If this could be implemented in brick and mortar with twitter, then this would be great.

Facebook used at Niagra County Community College in Intro English. With it students asked & answered each other, studied for tests, and collaborated on group projects. Streamlined approach to compiling links/images/videos which are accessible to classmates. There was simplicity in having class info where students are spending time already

This article shows how to engage students and improve learning and comprehension of subject material, without the traditional lecture.  I will need a little latitude with this article and the assignment of social media in the classroom. This article does not focus on the use of social media but explains how systems can be used to prime students prior to coming to class and at the same time inform the instructor what areas students are having difficulties with at the time.  This is great because instructors and students do not have to go over information that has already been learned. Social media can be the vehicles used for this type of communication.
