    I thought this article was interesting, about the communities of practice because it was discussing who you interact with can shape your learning and thoughts. If you create a community of practice for a specific group, your learning is shaped by those who are in that community. It was discussing a teachers community of practice, how most of them collaborate with their own colleagues and therefore share and learn from each other which them reflects on their teaching.

    This article had mentioned a good point about communities of practice: not all communitites are communities of practice. They gave the example of a neighborhood, it is a community where people are living, but they are not necessarily practicing a common interest. However if you have a neighborhood watch group to watch and protect the surrounding homes, them that would be a community of practice because they have the same goal and are working together. It stated that learning can be the reason for the group to come together, or it can be an outcome of someone's actions.

    This article explains that technology is the main reason for learning networks. We have been learning online, through websites and interactions between people for a long time now. It states that learning together with other people online can be much more engaging, entertaining and worth our time.

    Some of this article seemed a bit outdated for me. I realize that it was written in 2002 but it dated itself in the writing. What I did like was how they acknowledge that Instructional and Educational technology are slightly different. I did not know the difference until 541.

    This is a great resource when thinking through joining a PLN. The tips are simple and descriptive. I was impressed with this piece. I think the best tip was "Be an active participant". Great advice.

The Network Is The Learning - 1 views

    First, I am struck that this 7 year old video is still current in light of all that changes with knowledge. Second, Siemens explains Network, Node and their importance to Connectivism. He also addresses this need for us to remain current. He mentions that more important and quicker means of staying current is through our Networks. He further mentions the point that if we don't keep up with what is going on in education we become obsolete. Lastly, he mentioned dropping links that direct you away from your knowledge quest.

    I like that Siemens talks about how adding one more connection, or node, to a network amplifies the entire network and that some nodes become obsolete over time. However, he doesn't address how to filter the information or how to choose the nodes. But, this is a very short talk :)

    I liked his comment about staying current in our own education, learning and teachings. Being connected to the internet/network helps us be current, up to date and we are able to do that because we can connect to the network 24/7.

    I have noticed a few YouTube links, which concerns me a bit that I never thought of looking there myself. Clearly I need to extend my "web," as it could lead me to resources such as this. It was refreshing to hear the information presented rather than comb through a long article. Sticking point for me was referencing the need to stay current. I am hoping that this course, as well as others in this program, will significantly help with that.

    I like the table they provide that asks the question that a community of practice would ask for each category. I like how they always use the word "we" because of the community aspect.

    This is a great intro to communities of practice. I've been referring to this site as I work on my creative expression. I like how its written in plain language and easy to understand. The way the theory is broken down is also really helpful.

    I appreciated the definition. Specifically, I appreciated the distinction between a community and a community of practice based on these three characteristics: the domain (an identity defined by a shared interest(s), the community (engaging in joint activities. Interestingly, a website or having the same job/title is not a community unless there is mutual learning), and the practice (mutual interests do not make a community of practice; by definition, members must be practitioners.) I also found interesting that 1) learning can be the reason or an incidental outcome and 2) sometimes people may not even know that they form a community of practice (for instance, nurses meeting regularly at lunch to discuss their prof. practice.) Thank you for sharing!

    This is a great resource giving the reader an introduction to CoP - a group of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.. The best part of this resource are the 3 critical characteristics of a CoP (domain, community, and practice) explained well.

    I forgot to add my summary! This is an excellent source that fully explains what a Community of Practice is and how it can be applied. "Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly." I particularly liked the section about what CoPs actually look like. This is a must have resource for every EdTech student.

    The author lists three "must-haves" to be considered a community of practice: the domain - shared interest, the community - learn from each other, the practice - share a repertoire of resources. Communities of practice fall back to learning theories. The term community of practice refers to a living curriculum. The concept is being applied in organizations, government, education, associations, social sector, international development, and the web.

    This is a great article with a bunch of ideas for how to integrate technology into our daily lessons with our students. This made me realize just recently in my own browsing that I came across a great resource I should share back with you. It's http://www.cnn.com/studentnews/index.html and it can help students read the news of the day, has video clips to watch as well as questions and topics for discussion. Another useful "daily" that can be done in the class. Thank you for sharing these great ways to integrate more tech into what we do!
