Simple steps to follow when teaching ELL students

A few months ago we started up a new Twitter chat series, #Bufferchat. So far, we've talked about everything from productivity to social media monitoring and lots of other topics in between. These days, we have up to 185 participants each week, sending out nearly 2,000 tweets. It's a true delight!

Any questions you may have on how to use Google Drive supported software tools like Google Docs, Google Slides and Forms will likely be answered in this extensive step by step training document. You can also find the link to the YouTube video that shows the live training.

This is one of the few resources I decided to use that was not found at scholar.google.com but rather a simple Google search. I choose this power point because it breaks down Personal Learning networks in digestible pieces easy to understand. Within the presentation Pam does a great job establishing the importance for teachers themselves to establish their own PLN's to not only benefit themselves but also their students that will be learning from them as well. She goes on to describe what a PLN is and the benefits they offer. What I like most about Pam's presentation is that she includes ways to set up popular PLN's from scratch such as RSS readers, blogs, twitter, and professional networks as well. The quick points and step by step processes made this a standout resource for me when learning about personal learning networks.

Summary: This article identifies possible gaps in Connectivism (as a learning theory) and its interpretation when it comes to MOOCs. The article explores the principles that are not addressed or not supported by Connectivism. Some of these "forgotten" principles are: motivation, self-efficacy, cognitive load, prior knowledge, avoids scaffolding, doesn't differentiate between expert and novice, and ignores novices' needs.

I like the point made that not everyone is actually a "Node" in a MOOC or similar connectivist structure. I agree with the author that this will always be the case because we unfortunately are not " all digitally literate nodes, knowledge is in the network, we are all motivated, have good learning strategies, and information sifting abilities, and can cope with multi-platform information streams...". Great find!

Thanks for sharing this!! I work in Higher Ed. So I always thought the Khan Academy was for very young kids. It does appear that is still who it is geared towards, but looking around I can see some beneficial information for all ages. Great resource!!

Khan Academy is one of the most popular tutorial websites on the internet. This website covers every subject you can think of with step by step tutorial videos along with the option to practice the concepts as well. The students receive feedback from the practice and the tutorials provide detailed instructions for each lesson.

This is an example of a simulation software for math. This website constructs any geometry figure possible. It shows you step by step how to do a geometry construction. The students can control the pace of the simulation, pause it and play it forward.

Using these step by step instructions you can make an interactive quiz which you can embed into a website. Since the quiz is in Google Forms you can collect the information inputted into the forms in a Google spreadsheet.

This website gives a step by step explanation of how to embed a Google Document and how to resize the embedded image. There is a default size when embedding an image and most of the time users want to enlarge that image.

This website offers step by step instructions on how to integrate subjects into physical education and vice versa. In addition, it offers several links to actual lesson plans and ideas.

Video offers great description of the importance of PLN's and although there is a lot of discussion on ways to create a PLN, the importance of communication is highlighted as the key to a successful PLN.

This tutorial gives a step by step description of how to create your own PLN as a teacher. A 5 minute video provides the importance of creating a PLN and tools to use. There are various links on how to use social media to grow your PLN. Another list provides links to specific tools to use to help grow your PLN or join another PLN.

This resource does have some excellent resources. I look forward to exploring more of the how-to aspect in future modules.
