What Is HTML? Back to Basics | Design Shack - 0 views

  • HTML is all you need to create a web page
  • HTML is the pivotal piece of the puzzle.
  • the web is written in plain text.
  • writing code is more like using WriteRoom or IA Writer; all you get is plain old letters and symbols
  • “mark up” your document and insert extra indicators of how you want the text to be formatted.
  • With HTML, this markup is accomplished through tags.
  • bold tag
  • “<b>”
  • “</b>
  • <i>This is italicized.</i>
  • <b>bold</b>.

  • not just a tag but an attribute as well

  • tag (<a></a>)
  • attribute (href)
  • <tag attribute="VALUE">Text, images, etc.</tag>
  • anything between the “a” tags becomes a link.
  • “src” attribute
  • “alt” attribute
  • “img” info
  • it’s basically a way to give the browser plain text and have it output richly formatted and even active content that can be clicked on to some end.
  • HTML mostly relates to directly inputting content onto a page.
  • CSS is The Skin, Hair and Clothing
  • Cascading Style Sheets, or CSS.
  • The typical web developer workflow might be to insert all the various pure content first into an HTML document, then jump over to CSS and begin crafting that content to appear in a more visually pleasing and usable way
  • JavaScript jumps into this game by taking a more active role in how the page behaves.
  • HTML5 developers have some new tags to work with that make the basic structure of a web page more logical.

Student Response Technology: Empirically grounded or just a gimmick? - International Jo... - 0 views

  •
Abstract: Student Response Technology (SRT) involves the use of hand-held remotes by students during classroom lectures to electronically respond to questions. This study surveyed 350 students enrolled in one of 13 lower-division university science classes taught by five different instructors who used SRT. The survey probed students' perceptions of SRT in terms of enhancing student learning, and investigated which features of SRT students felt had the greatest/least impact on student learning. The majority of students reported that the SRT increased their content understanding, class participation, alertness, and interactions with fellow students, helped with examination preparation, provided important and immediate instructor feedback, and made class more enjoyable. Students in this study scored more positively than peer groups on survey questions related to student engagement in academic and intellectual experiences, suggesting that SRT helps to promote student engagement. Important instructor actions identified during this study that augment the enhancing effects of SRT on student learning, even in large lecture settings, include designing clear, substantive questions, reviewing correct and incorrect answers with students, and making pedagogical adjustments based on class responses.

Free online document creating and publishing.

I have used Google Docs for co-editing documents with students and sharing documents. Co-editing allows in-class and out of class synchronous and asynchronous collaboration. In particular, I find the ability to synchronously co-edit in class with my students a powerful feature. I can view the students and student groups editing the document and provide input as needed.

Students Make Their Case in Colorado | Edutopia - 0 views

  • via videoconference
  • This activity was a simulation, but to make the assignment more authentic, school board members agreed to listen to students' arguments and pose questions based on the school district's book-adoption guidelines. On his popular blog the Fischbowl, Fisch recruited more educators from outside the district to take part via videoconference.

  • Parents, teachers, and interested school board members were able to participate, too, because they streamed the conference live.
  • Smith's class wiki gave teams an online space where they could collaboratively plan their presentations,
  • The live author interview was not a planned part of the project, but it used technology tools Smith and Fisch had previously tapped for other classroom events: Skype (a free videoconferencing application) and a webcam, Ustream for free live streaming and archiving, and Twitter to publicize the chat and to receive questions and comments in real time from remote listeners.

And You Thought it Could Not Be Done: Blogging in Math | Silvia Tolisano- Langwitc... - 0 views

  •
This project has students examining statistics using blogs. For this project, the teacher gave her class data from a survey given to students from the year prior. The classes goal was to tell a story of the prior years class using statistics. Students had to find tools online to create visual representations of their data. They used their class blog as a hub for exchanging good resources and ideas. When they finished creating their visuals and summarizing the data, they finalized their work in a personal blog entry. Then students shared their blog posts and were given time to read and comment on other students interpretations. This a great project because it gives students an opportunity to write about math which doesn't happen as often as it should. It also gives students insight into all the different ways a set of data can be perceived. I like extending this idea of blogging to being a hub where students finalize and reflect on all of their projects during the year. As an English teacher, I value writing. I really value and chance I can to incorporate writing into my math class.

Professor Encourages Students to Pass Notes During Class -- via Twitter - Wired Campus ... - 2 views

I love this idea.  It's a college class, but it could easily be adapted to a high school environment.  The back channel in online education provides a rich source for learning.  If this could be implemented in brick and mortar with twitter, then this would be great.
