Dabbagh, N., & Kitsantas, A. (2012). Personal Learning Environments, social media, and self-regulated learning: A natural formula for connecting formal and informal learning. The Internet and higher education, 15(1), 3-8.

The authors discuss how students can use social media to create personal learning environments (PLEs) which can serve as a source of informal learning to support formal learning in higher education. Students and faculty are in increasing number, using social media for collaboration and sharing of knowledge. PLEs afford students the opportunity to have control over some of their learning through social interaction. PLEs also promote self-regulated learning. The authors developed a framework for social media use to support self-regulated learning through PLEs. The levels of the framework are: personal information management, social interaction and collaboration and information aggregation and management:" (Dabbagh & Kistantas, 2012)
