Chen, B., & Bryer, T. (2012). Investigating instructional strategies for using social media in formal and informal learning. The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning, 13(1), 87-104.

The authors conducted a qualitative study to explore why social media is not used more frequently in educational settings, to make the case supporting the use of social media in formal learning environments and proved strategies as to how to connect formal and informal learning through social media. The participants primarily used social media for personal and professional purposes. Most participants saw the benefit of using social media for student learning. Concerns for the use of social media ranged from security, to privacy, to digital citizenship to technology issues. Strategies, planning and best practices could facilitate more educators to include social media as a part of their instructional strategy.

An interesting study, Darin! Not only does it look into learning theories like connectivism and types of learning, but I also like how it states definite benefits to using social networks for learning, such as creativity, social connections, ease of use, and firming up of students' understanding of the content. Great find!
