Davis, T. (2013). Building and using a personal/professional learning network with social media. The Journal of Research in Business Education, 55(1), 1.
The author characterizes personal learning networks (PLN) as an aspect of the Social Constructivist Theory of Learning. PLNs are about seeking knowledge and learning from others in a social circle. Technology and social media in particular have educators to use PLN in their practice. However, as social media becomes even more ubiquitous, both teachers and learners are utilizing social media to enhance and improve learning. PLNs offer quick, varied and multiple responses to seekers of knowledge. Educators primarily use social media PLNs to collaborate and share resources to improve the learning environment. Learners use social media PLNs to gain understanding and multiple perspectives on a variety of subjects.
