Students around the world study a local water habitat. They collect data, a suggested list is provided, and share their findings with others. The idea is to promote understanding of the various impacts on water habitats and to take action to improve and sustain quality habitats based on scientific understandings. This project includes mentoring from a university environmental scientist.

This site provides teachers many teaching points on Georgia's five main habitats as well as the plants and animals that live within each one. While the Habitats Research page is a preporatory page for the in-school "field trips" the company provides, it is still an excellent resource for science instruction (regardless of whether you order the program or not).

This is a great interactive site where students can learn more about location and animals in their habitats. Habitats are a big part of the fourth grade curriculum.

Play games and travel through the Web of Life while learning about wildlife and habitat. Kid's Planet by Defenders of Wildlife. Great also for teachers gives units on animals that could be used for habitat studies in fourth grade.

BrainPop is a highly-regarded, Flash-based video site that offers an array of movies on all kinds of curricular topics covered during the school year. This particular site provides the framework for a teacher to teach a lesson on animal habitats. Beyond just watching the movie and answering the quiz questions, the educator site gives the objectives, materials, preparation, lesson procedures, vocabulary, and extension activities to do with the students. You will have to create a free educator account to gain access to this page.

These videos, provided by the Apple Learning Interchange, provide a short snippet about a particular topic (in this case, the changes humans cause on animal habitats) and then launch into a multifaceted lesson. Teachers have a purpose, learning activities, resources, and examples of student projects to use to guide them through the provided lessons. Standards are clearly represented through an "Evidence of Learning" section (with rubrics) as well as NETS and 21st Century Learning Skills Alignments sections. Teachers can use many available photos and interviews during the lesson, as well.

This website would be great to use for the animal habitat projects that we did last year in fourth grade. It also has lots of information just on animals where you could use to do animal research for a project.

Another good portal to access animal information at National Geographic. You can filter animal choices by category (eg birds, bugs, reptiles) or by habitat (eg artic, forest, ocean). Includes colorful pictures, videos, sounds, and facts as well as a printable sheet combining information.

Journey Into Amazonia features the swollen rivers, flooded forests and dense canopy of the vast rain forest recognized as one of Earth's natural wonders. My students can actually feel like they are searching through the amazon and learn more about rainforest in their habitat units.

Animal facts from National Geographic. This portal in an a to z directory making it easier to find animals students need facts on. Also includes size relative to humans or commonly understood items. Includes map of where the animals live.

Students began by studying biomes then divided into groups of five. Each student in the group drew one of the five major biomes. Using books, cds, and the internet they had to find out the physical features, wildlife, vegetation, climate, and problems confronting their biome. Each person in the group contributed information, video footage taken at the zoo or aquarium, and additional graphics when needed to teach others about their chosen biome. The project was put together in iMovie and shared with all students in the class.
