In a report offered by the US Department of Education, many schools are not offering equal education to all of their students despite efforts in education reforms. This article offered some interesting statistics that varied by states here in the US-take a look! Reminded me of lots of the same issues of inequality in the book The Children in Room E4.
I definitely agree with April's comment. I think that the idea to reduce the number of immigrants (legal and illegal) based on poor academic achievement is horrible. Judy W., a reader from Maryland posted a quote saying, "With their lack of education and skills these are not the sort of people we want as future citizens". I think that most Americans forget that we were ALL immigrants at one point, and assimilation into American culture can be challenging. I personally know lots of Mexican-Americans that really value education and instill it into their children. I disagree with Andy from Maryland when he made the comment that it all boiled down to their culture. Yes he spent 4 years in Mexico, but he can't speak for the whole culture of Mexicans. I think it's very ignorant that he would even make such a haughty comment.
