Mayer (2009) states that there are two approaches to multimedia design, a technology-centered approach and a learner-centered approach. This week's module requires that the student locates three web sites that include multimedia artifacts for active learning related to the topic of an identified multimedia workshop. For each web site located the student must state whether the active engagement required focuses on behavioral or cognitive activity and describe whether learner-centered or technology centered learning is accomplished. A technology-centered approach according to Mayer (2009) focuses on giving people (students) access to the latest technology rather than helping people (students) learn through the aid of technology whereas learner-centered technology focuses on using multimedia technology as an aid to human cognition. This student has identified the topic of building or creating a simple classroom web site for use by nurse educators as the focus for this course. Site 1. http://how-to-build-websites.com/ The learner/student will have to use technology in order to access the materials and instructions included in this site. Once the materials are accessed the learner then becomes actively engaged in cognitive activity, in this case reading.
Site2. https://sites.google.com/ The learner/student will have to use technology in order to access the Google sites pages but once there the learner will be actively engaged in behavioral activity using the templates to create a website for educational purposes. This is a prime example of multimedia learning using both words and pictures (Mayer, 2009). Site 3. http://www.artisteer.com/ This site includes a tutorial presentation which learners can actively watch and a free download for a limited period of time, the site includes both behavioral and cognitive activities and is technology centered. All the information is in the form of different web pages which the learner has to use technology to access and then needs to scroll through in order to visualize the content.
