There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of websites available today to help us in creating multimedia materials. Many are free to use, and many have a cost associated with their use. And depending on the constraints we work under, we are only limited by our imaginations when it comes to creating multimedia materials. I have listed eight resources in four topic areas: pre-training, graphic organizers, presentations, and authentic assessment activities.

Pre-training strategies are used to help learners become familiar with the names and characteristics of main concepts before training begins.
    TED Talks
    http://www.ted.com/talks
At TED talks, you can view over 900 short videos covering a wide variety of topics. The talks are arranged in 50 themes. A pre-training assignment could be to view a selected talk and come to class prepared to participate in a discussion covering said topic.

    You Tube
    http://www.youtube.com
Similar to TED Talks, YouTube is a video-sharing website on which users can upload, view and share videos. Here, again, a pre-training assignment could be to view a selected talk and come to class prepared to participate in a discussion covering said topic.

Graphic organizers are cues that support the signaling principle by highlighting the organization of the essential material.
    bubbl.us
    http://www.bubbl.us
bubbl.us is a Web 2.0 tool that enables users to create mind mapping and brainstorming diagrams online. Enter the main topic/concept into the parent bubble. Then add new ideas and thoughts that will be recorded in colorful text bubbles linked to the parent bubble.

    mind42
    http://mind42.com
Similar to bubbl.us, Mind42 is an online mind mapping application and management and organization tools that allows users to visualize their thinking using the mind mapping method. Mind42 name refers to the collaborative features of the product, and is intended to be pronounced like "mind for two.

Presentation, in the context of multi-media learning, refers to the presentation of material using both words and pictures with the intent of promoting deeper, more meaningful learning.

    ToonDoo
    http://www.toondoo.com/
According to their website, "ToonDoo is a cool, comic-creating tool from Jambav, a fun site for kids. Jambav is devoted to creating a unique array of free and customizable online games of educational value for children of all abilities." There may be some applicability with this for teaching children, but I sense that this would fall into the category of extraneous material in the adult learning context.

    Lectora Inspire
    http://lectora.com/
According to their website, "Lectora® Inspire makes online course development fast and simple. Bundled with the leading flash content creation, screen capture and recording software, Lectora's powerful authoring tools empower you to quickly create dynamic video and Flash content as well as transform your e-Learning to HTML5 for mobile delivery."

Authentic Assessment Activities are those activities that put the learner in a 'real world' situation where they can display their grasp of new material with demonstration or explanation.

    Wikispaces
    http://www.wikispaces.com/
A wiki can be used by an individual to demonstrate their grasp of new material, or as a collaborative tool where a group can work together to solve a problem or create a product.

    Blogger
    http://www.blogger.com
Web logs, or blogs, allow us to share ideas, collaborate and showcase our work. We can work together by sharing ideas and refining a draft of a project.
