Filament Games - 5 views

  •
Filament Games is a Game production studio that exclusively creates learning Games. Our core competency is producing Games that combine best practices in commercial Game development with key concepts from the learning sciences. Accordingly, our senior staff is comprised of individuals who are equal parts Game and instructional designers; a "dual literacy" that allows us to engineer authentic Gameplay mechanics (rules and interactions that directly correlate with specific learning objectives). Filament Games was founded in 2005 by education technology expert Dan White, Game designer Dan Norton, and software engineer Alex Stone. In the time since, Filament has developed over 30 educational Games for clients ranging from National Geographic's JASON Science to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's iCivics Inc.

IRIDESCENT: 5 Signals that an "Educational Game" Isn't Really a Game - 0 views

  • How can you spot the fake games masquerading as educational games?
  • 1. When walking through a demo of the game, the game designer stops to say "And this part is where the learning occurs."
  • 2. "And then to add the motivational element, we added a game component to the lesson."
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • 3. Excessive use of the word "fun" in describing why the game works.
  • 4. Extensive in-game tutorials, as videos or text.
  • 5. Multiple choice items in the game that have clear right answers.
  •
An interesting discussion of game-based learning and the false attempts to 'make games' for education.

Concepts in Game Development (GamesDev) | Open2Study - 3 views

  •
"There are lots of different skills that go into game development. This course is about key technical concepts in game development, and has been developed for people of many different backgrounds and skills. Some programming experience would be nice but is not required. We start by looking at the central role of game design and common development processes used in the industry. You will see how game software can be broken into parts that work together, and in particular the idea of game engines. We'll explore the relationship between game design, balance and player experience. Lastly we'll look at enhancing player experience though the use of AI techniques."

Robotic ball Sphero points to a new era in computer games: Tech Weekly podcast | Technology | theguardian.com - 0 views

  •
"This week on Tech Weekly with games editor Keith Stuart we take a look at an emerging trend in games, where smartphones and cutting-edge robotics are used to create more socially inclusive and dynamic games. Joining Keith is Guardian writer Alex Hern; Iain Simons, director of the gameCity festival; and Jonathan Smith, games producer for Lego. The panel discuss why the screen is only a part of the gaming experience - and why small-scale, cheap robotics will open up a new world for developers. Also this week: Guardian tech writer Samuel Gibbs meets Ian Bernstein, co-creator of the robotic toy ball the Sphero, to find out about the evolution of the robot in gaming."

"During this semester-long course, you will be spending a lot of time playing video games (woohoo!) but you'll also spend time getting critical about the games you play and the way in which video games reflect and shape your attitudes to other people, yourselves and the world! Of course, you will also get to be creative as well by creating your own online game reviews and designing your own video game. "

Great Stats on this site For generations, games have been used to teach concepts, skills, and knowledge. Think Yahtzee, Monopoly, and math; Scrabble and spelling; Mastermind, Qwirkle, and strategy; Clue and problem solving…the list goes on and on. games are challenging, interesting, and engaging. And with the ever-enhancing technology landscape, games are more immersive than ever. Individual or massive multiplayer online games have grown exponentially in the last few years, and projections only show gaming consumption increasing.

A Parent's Guide to Gaming: Defintions of Popular Gaming Terms - ABC News - 3 views

  •
But the good news is that, despite the hobby's sprawling growth into new areas like digital, cloud and social games, once you've mastered the basics, grasping more offbeat turns of phrase quickly becomes second-nature. (Or you could do what even the best of us are often forced to do in a pinch: Google the darn term.) Consider the following gaming dictionary a crash course in all things interactive entertainment -- memorize it, and who knows? You may even become proficient enough to talk with your kids about the latest games without making them burst into tears of laughter.

A Guide to Game-Based Learning | Edutopia - 3 views

From @coolcatteacher "Is Game-Based Learning the Same as Gamification? Not exactly. Gamification is "applying typical elements of Game playing (e.g., point scoring, competition with others, rules of play) to other areas of activity." Great classrooms often use both. Every day in my classroom, I'm using the essentials: gamification elements, reward systems, and Game-based learning. I've already covered 5 Ways to Design Effective Rewards for Game-Based Learning. Let's learn how to pick the Games."

  •
Top 10 Game of Thrones Filming Locations As soon as "Game of Thrones" premiered on HBO back in 2011, it instantly became one of the most popular shows on TV. The series takes place in various fictional locations in the continents of Westeros and Essos, and fans have discovered that many of these places actually exist in real life! If you've ever dreamed of taking a trip to these real-life settings, why not take a trip with us instead? We'll be showing you the real-life King's Landing, Dorne, the Haunted Forest, and more. This is: 10 Game of Thrones Locations That Exist In Real Life. One of the most eye-catching scenes in the television show is Daenerys throne room. It includes a massive staircase and a bench for the powerful woman to sit on. While the stairs were built by the show's production crew, the actual location is called Diocletians Palace in the city of Split, Croatia. And above the city of Split is a place called Fortress of Klis. But "Game of Thrones" fans may recognize it as the shows city-state of Meereen. We'll also be showing you the monastery that was inspired by the Eyrie, and the actual staircase and surrounding city that the show's fans know as the Great Sept of Baelor. If that doesn't excite you, just wait until we show you what the House of the Undying looks like to local residents and tourists. If you'd like to see even more "Game of Thrones" locations that exist in real life, including the caves in The Stormland and Pyke, make sure to watch our video. Fun and games - 2 views

"VIDEO games have become one of the most notable features of our culture, yet the industry receives relatively scant attention in mainstream media. This is not only curious, it is unfortunate; because many parents and carers and educators remain unnecessarily wary of this crucible of creativity. The reach of these games is expanding with the take-up of smartphones and tablet computers. A recent study by the head of media communications and technology at Bond University, Jeffrey Brand, found that about 95 per cent of Australian children under 15 play video games."

For The Win » Blog Archive » Why gamification would rip open the classroom - 3 views

  •
There is something in games based learning that seems to get missed out of much of the discussion. While it's common to think of using game-like approaches or video-games I find much of what is said revolves about how games work in terms of mechanics. Level ups, XP (experience) and badges seem to dominate the gamification dialogue. I wonder how you can gamify the workplace or the classroom without also exploring the more important aspects of why people play - how it feels to be immersed in a story that you feel a part of. Players are given badges and tokens all the time, except these don't provide that intrinsic motivation that people often associate with gamification. For the love of it. How do you get people to play for that reward?
