Electric car maker Tesla Motors is handing over the keys to its technology in an unusual effort to encourage other automakers to expand beyond gasoline-burning vehicles.

Electric car manufacturer Tesla has revealed a battery for the home that can store power from solar panels, be used in case of a power outage and potentially transition solar-powered homes to be off the grid entirely. "The goal is complete transformation of the entire energy infrastructure of the world, to completely sustainable zero carbon," said the company's founder, Elon Musk.

A growing number of billion-dollar companies are showing that sustainability can be a real driver of profits, writes Freya Williams. Companies such as Tesla, Chipotle Mexican Grill, IKEA, Nike and Whole Foods Market are making serious money through eco-friendly business models. As battery storage technology has improved - Tesla announced in May its entry into the energy storage market - an increasing number of hotels are investing in energy storage systems to help reduce demand charges that typically account for at least 30 percent of a commercial electricity bill, and often as much as 50 percent.

2017 Sustainability Leaders Survey" (GlobeScan, SustainAbility, and Sustainable Brands) asked more than 1,000 experts to list companies that are leaders in integrating sustainability into their business strategy. The most frequently cited companies included the following: * Unilever * Patagonia * Interface * IKEA * Marks and Spencer (M&S) * Natura * Tesla * Nestlé * BASF * General Electric * Nike

Amidst the madness of 2017, a bigger shift was missed than probably any other - right at the commanding heights of the economy: Natural gas fizzled out of the plan for the future.

A group of ten automakers - including BMW Group, Daimler AG, and Honda - have partnered to launch DRIVE Sustainability, which aims to "drive sustainability throughout the automotive supply chain by promoting a common approach within the industry and by integrating sustainability in the overall procurement process." CSR Europe is facilitating the partnership.
