UPS will accelerate the implementation of its ORION routing system to reduce the distance traveled by its drivers by around 100 million miles annually. The routing improvements are projected to reduce fleet CO2 emissions by 100,000 metric tons, fuel consumption by 10 million gallons, and save the company more than $300 million annually when completed in 2016.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open golf tournament diverted 100% of its waste from landfills for the second consecutive year. The tournament also avoided 346 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, 369,000 gallons of water, and 471,000 KW-h of electricity.

Dell's Connected Workplace program helped the company avoid 6,700 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions last year.

PepsiCo announced that its transportation fleet reduced fuel consumption by 24% from 2010 levels, enabling the company to avoid 55,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions. PepsiCo also announced new efforts to seek lower-carbon fuels from suppliers, join the Business for Social Responsibility's Future of Fuels program, purchase additional electric delivery vehicles, and help to develop appropriate U.S. fleet fuel efficiency standards.

Private equity firm KKR announced that Del Monte, Dollar General, Sealy, and the 24 other companies in its Green Portfolio Program have collectively avoided more than 2.3 million metric tons of GHG emissions from 2008 to 2013, generating $1.2 billion in new savings and revenues. Companies in the Green Portfolio Program agree to assess, measure, and optimize their environmental performance in ways that improve their businesses.

Google, Apple, Bank of America, Best Buy, HP and Microsoft are among those giving financial incentives based on sustainability metrics a shot, according to a round up of corporate disclosure documents released this week by the environmental nonprofit CDP.

For thousands of years humans have existed on Earth, but it is only in the last 100 or so that plastics have entered our lives. These days you can barely go a minute without touching something made from some kind of plastic. But while we've been getting all swept up in the convenience that synthetic polymers bring us, the trash has been piling up. Millions of metric tons of plastic enter the ocean every year, and no one really knows where it is and what damage it is causing. So ... what are we to do about it?

It started as a dialogue about "ingredients of concern" in cosmetics and other personal care products, orchestrated by rival retailers Target and Walmart. Three years later, that ongoing conversation - facilitated by the Sustainability Consortium and Forum for the Future, and representing 18 industry stakeholders - has produced an ambitious series of recommendations that guide principles of sustainability for this class of consumer goods and how these metrics should be disclosed.

NRG Energy introduced additional sustainability goals, which build on its science-based absolute GHG reduction goals set in 2014. The goals include: reducing water use 40% by 2030, reducing supply chain carbon and water intensity 25% by 2025, increasing recycling rate of coal combustion residuals 30% by 2022, and helping customers avoid 120 million metric tons of CO2-equivalent emissions by 2020.

The wool-which The North Face is using in a new beanie with the tagline, "Warm your dome, not the globe"-is produced in a way that allows the ranchers to sequester large amounts of carbon as they raise sheep. In a year, Bare Ranch's methods will sequester around 4,000 metric tons of CO2, offsetting the emissions from roughly 850 cars.
