The Southern California Gas Company is attempting to fix a methane leak at one of its energy facilities in Aliso Canyon, California, which is reportedly spewing 110,000 pounds of the gas into the air every hour. The Environmental Defense Fund has called it "one of the biggest leaks we've ever seen reported" and "absolutely uncontained."

A liquid ammonia leak from a frozen storage and logistics business in Shanghai sent stinging fumes into a nearby residential area, killing at least 15 people and injuring 25 others, reports China's Xinhua News Agency.

More than 200 million gallons of contaminated wastewater from a fertilizer plant in central Florida leaked into one of the state's main underground sources of drinking water after a massive sinkhole opened up beneath a storage pond, a phosphate company said Friday. The sinkhole, discovered by a worker on Aug. 27, is believed to reach down to the Floridan aquifer, the company said in a news release.

Clean-technology accelerator the Cleantech Open has awarded PowWow Energy (pictured) the Grand Prize Cleanie award worth $200,000 for the Top Cleantech Entrepreneur of the year. PowWow Energy has developed technology that enables farmers and ranchers to quickly detect water leaks that can destroy an entire crop or cause thousands of dollars of damage.

An analysis published Feb. 26 in the journal Nature Climate Change shows that the wastewater produced during the processing of palm oil is a significant source of heat-trapping methane in the atmosphere. But the researchers also present a possible solution: capturing the methane and using it as a renewable energy source.

AT&T and IBM - along with Mueller Water Products, a large maker of pipes, valves and fire hydrants - are working together to try to put more information in water managers' hands. The companies have put together a new service to hook up all those pipes to the internet.
