The Coca-Cola Company has partnered with NRG eVgo, a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc., to join Governor Jerry Brown's call to have 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles on California's roads by 2025. Coca-Cola will provide electric vehicle (EV) charging at seven of its facilities across California. eVgo will install and manage the charging stations to provide workplace charging for Coca-Cola employees with EVs.

Unilever will work with NRG Energy to ensure that 100% of its U.S. energy needs are met through clean and renewable sources by 2020. Unilever already purchases renewable energy certificates to cover 100% of its U.S. electricity consumption, but will transition to direct renewable energy generation with the help of NRG.

NRG Energy, Inc. has announced ambitious sustainability goals as part of its continued corporate growth strategy. NRG says it estimates that its new carbon-reduction goals will avoid approximately 3 billion tons of CO2 emissions by 2050.

NRG Energy introduced additional sustainability goals, which build on its science-based absolute GHG reduction goals set in 2014. The goals include: reducing water use 40% by 2030, reducing supply chain carbon and water intensity 25% by 2025, increasing recycling rate of coal combustion residuals 30% by 2022, and helping customers avoid 120 million metric tons of CO2-equivalent emissions by 2020.

NRG Energy announced new long-term sustainability targets, which include slashing carbon-dioxide emissions from 2014 levels 50 percent by 2030 and 90 percent by 2050.

The International Panel on Climate Change has already warned of irreversible damage linked to greenhouse gas emissions and called for an 80-percent reduction of power-sector emissions by 2050. "We decided to go a little further."

Necker Island, a small Caribbean island owned by business icon Richard Branson, has signed a contract to slash its diesel fuel use by building a renewable energy-powered microgrid.
