Daytona State College - - 0 views

"Daytona State College, a fifty-three year old former community college, now a state college offering four year degree, has a very seriously embarked upon the task of greatly reducing the cost of higher education via the replacement of traditional textbooks with a number of textbook alternatives, to include e-textbooks. Our faculty and administration are equally as passionate about solving this "student access limiting" issue. Many of the College's students pay more for textbooks than they pay for tuition and fees."

At 75, University-Press Association Rides the 'Second Digital Wave' - Wired Campus - Th... - 0 views

  • They’ve already worked their way into most presses’ planning, according to an AAUP survey on digital-publishing strategies released just ahead of the meeting. The survey, “Digital Book Publishing Strategies in the AAUP Community,” collected responses from 80 presses, or 60 percent of the association’s membership.
  • In his experience, university presses get 60 to 70 percent of their retail revenues from Amazon sales now.

  • More notable findings: Ninety-three percent of responding presses reported that they’re pursuing short-run digital printing and/or print on demand for their backlist titles; more than 70 percent are doing the same for their new or front-list titles. Eighty-six percent sell certain e-book titles through aggregators. Almost 60 percent are trying print-on-demand for foreign distribution—a new category on the survey. And a quarter of those surveyed said they’re trying out short-form digital books, like Princeton’s Digital Shorts series (tagline: “Short Takes, Big Ideas”).

eTextbooks: iPad & eReaders Lag Behind, PCs Still Dominant - 0 views

  •
"Another market where eBooks have a lot of potential is education. It too is at an early stage, but there are many benefits to students accessing their text books electronically. Shared highlights, margin notes, search - to name a few. Surprisingly though, it's not iPad and eReaders that are driving the eTextbook market - but PCs and netbooks. The iPhone and Android are making some in-roads, however. "

"Students aren't going to "suddenly" want digital textbooks because they grew up reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar on an iPad.
