Key Molecule for Life Found in Habitable Region of the Galaxy | Wired Science from Wire... - 0 views

  •
A sugar molecule linked to the origin of life was discovered in a potentially habitable region of our galaxy.

The molecule, called glycolaldehyde, was spotted in a large star-forming area of space around 26,000 light-years from Earth in the less-chaotic outer regions of the Milky Way. This suggests the sugar could be common across the universe, which is good news for extraterrestrial-life seekers.

"This is an important discovery as it is the first time glycolaldehyde, a basic sugar, has been detected towards a star-forming region where planets that could potentially harbor life may exist," Serena Viti of University College London said in a press release.

Windows 7 Installation Day Notes | sarahintampa - 0 views

I got my hands on Windows 7 at last, fresh off one of the PDC hard drives. I haven't even used it for a whole day yet, so I can't tell you much more than what you already know just now. I know there are a lot of things to like about this OS, and as I explore them, I'll go into more detail over on at Channel 10.

I did, however, experience one driver issue that I think is worth noting. Given that this is a pre-beta developer's copy of an operating system, I'm sure this will be resolved by the time it goes gold. But for the sake of those googling to find the solution, I figured it's worth putting this out there in case anyone has the same problem.

Step By Step: The Complete Guide to Speeding Up Your PC's Startup - 0 views

  •
You just hit the power button your PC, and now you've got enough time to brew a fresh pot of coffee for the entire office-because that's how long it takes for your computer to go from "on" to "ready to work." If your PC's bogged down by a bunch of programs that automatically start up when it does, it can take forever to get started every morning. Without a major hardware upgrade, there's not much you can do to cut the time it takes for Windows to actually boot-but you can trim and tweak the amount of time it takes for your desktop to get to a working state. Let's take a look at a few ways you can cut your Windows' desktop's loading times using built-in utilities and third-party tools.

Recession Drives the Greening of the Electronics Industry | Gadget Lab from Wired.com - 0 views

There's gold in them thar PCs -- not to mention silver, copper, aluminum and other valuable recyclables.

That fact, not a desire to save the planet, is now pushing the tech industry toward "greener" manufacturing and recycling practices. It could mean that there's an environmental silver lining to the mounting economic crisis: Tough times are forcing companies to resort to recycling as a means of recouping costs. These recycling measures are also good public relations in a time when consumers are increasingly eco-conscious -- and they might even be good for the planet.

15 Useful Project Management Tools | Developer's Toolbox | Smashing Magazine - 0 views

  •
There is a huge variety of project management applications out there. Most are general purpose apps, not aimed at any one industry. But there is a growing number of project management apps aimed specifically at one industry or another. Applications geared to creative types are becoming more readily available, and some of the offerings are really quite good.

Many of these project management apps have built-in code repositories and subversion browsers (or are built around them). A few have built-in bug and issue tracking. Others include more than just basic project management. All of them can help you keep track of activities and team members. There are both free and paid options. Some have very slick interfaces, and some are modeled more after desktop applications. All are relatively easy to use and easy to set up.

Below are 15 useful project management applications, almost all of which are targeted directly at Web developers, designers (both Web and print) and other creative types.

In 1988 a British politician and Margaret Thatcher wannabe named Edwina Currie, decided that she wasn't satisfied with having a face that merely looked like an Ass, she wanted to talk like one too.

At the time she was a Junior Minister for Health looking to make a name for herself within the Tory Party. Well she certainly achieved that when she made the asinine statement that "Most of the egg production in this country, sadly, is now affected with salmonella"

New James Bond thriller Quantum of Solace 'full of blunders' - Telegraph - 0 views

  •
Sharp-eyed 007 fans have apparently spied a string of mistakes in the new Bond thriller Quantum of Solace.

The film, which stars Daniel Craig as James Bond, is the 22nd Bond-based adventure and cost £100 million to make. It took a massive £24 million in its first weekend.

However critics claim to have spotted as many as six continuity and factual errors that they say spoil the film.

In one of the chase scenes where Bond is driving his Aston Martin and is being pursued by an Alfa Romeo, one of the other cars is shown with Italian plates with a Vauxhall Corsa badge whereas in Italy all Vauxhalls are rebadged as Opels.
